You cleared JEE this year — congratulations. Now comes the part nobody coaches you for: the counselling that actually decides where you spend the next four years. For every engineering aspirant in Jammu, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) process is the gatekeeper to seats across the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and it is live right now, with allotment rounds running into late July.
The shape of the process
JoSAA 2026 opened registration and choice-filling on 2 June and runs as a series of rounds — seat allotment, then seat confirmation, then online reporting and fee payment — repeated several times so that vacated seats trickle down to waiting candidates. Round 1 results came out in mid-June; later rounds continue into July. Everything happens online at josaa.nic.in; there is no separate counselling for each institute.
Choice-filling is where it's won or lost
The golden rule: list your choices in the exact order you want them, because JoSAA allots strictly by preference order and by rank. Don't leave a dream programme off your list because the cutoff scares you — if you don't list it, you can never get it. Fill generously and honestly, highest-priority first.
Float, freeze, slide — the trap
After each round you'll be asked to choose what to do with your allotted seat, and this is where students slip up:
Freeze: you're happy — accept and stop. You won't be considered for any other seat in later rounds.
Float: accept this seat for now, but stay in the running for a higher preference in the next round.
Slide: accept, but only move up within the same institute.
Pick deliberately. Choosing 'freeze' too early can lock you out of a better seat; choosing 'float' when you're actually satisfied risks unnecessary churn.
Don't lose the seat you won
An allotment is only provisional. You must complete seat acceptance, online reporting, document upload and fee payment within each round's deadline — miss it and the seat is gone, no matter your rank. Keep your marksheets, category and domicile certificates, ID and photographs scanned and ready, and watch deadlines like a hawk.
Treat josaa.nic.in as your single source of truth, ignore the rumour mill, and the most stressful fortnight of your year becomes a process you can actually control.
