17,76,576 consumer smart meters are now installed in Jammu and Kashmir against a sanctioned 20,52,784, according to a Greater Kashmir report of 30 October 2026. The administration aims to finish all sanctioned RDSS smart-meter installations by March 2027.

The numbers

  • Jammu (JPDCL): 5,73,806 of 7,21,346 installed, or 79.55 per cent. Kashmir (KPDCL): 5,70,432 of 6,85,700, or 83 per cent.

  • Distribution transformer meters: 38,920 of 82,196 installed; JPDCL has 17,178 of 41,526. All 661 JPDCL feeder meters are done.

  • Overall infrastructure is 78 per cent complete (JPDCL 67 per cent). The revised cost is Rs 5,842.78 crore, of which Rs 2,453.52 crore had been spent by 30 September 2026.

The tariff, in plain terms

The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission approved an average tariff increase of 6.83 per cent for 2026-27, effective 1 September 2026. That is an average across categories, so your own change depends on your consumer category; check the tariff order or your bill.

Does it cut losses?

The report cites Economic Survey 2024-25 figures showing Jammu's distribution losses falling from 30.79 to 21.18 per cent, but notes this cannot be attributed to smart meters alone.

For renters in Jammu the takeaway is practical: if your meter is not yet replaced, it likely will be before March 2027, so keep your consumer number and landlord's contact handy.
