Eight Doppler weather radars by 2027: that is the target Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh set out on Monday, November 2, while inaugurating a Seismological Observatory in Kishtwar. For anyone who travels the hill roads from Jammu or has lived through a cloudburst warning, the numbers are worth a slow read.

What is in place

  • Seismic observatories: four, at Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur and Kishtwar. The Kishtwar unit, in a zone the Tribune describes as high seismic risk, has digital equipment that sends real-time data to the National Centre for Seismology's 24x7 monitoring centre in New Delhi.
  • Doppler weather radars: four today, at Banihal, Jot, Jammu and Srinagar, up from none in 2014. Four more are due in 2027 at Doda, Kishtwar, Anantnag and Baramulla.
  • Automatic weather stations: 12, up from three (Udhampur, Kathua and Ramban). The new ones include four in Kishtwar, two each in Doda and Ramban and one in Kathua.
  • Rain gauge stations: 15, up from nine, across the five districts of the Union Minister's parliamentary constituency.

Why it matters on the ground

The report links the expansion to the Chasoti cloudburst tragedy of last year. Denser radars and stations are what let forecasters watch a storm cell build over the Chenab valley instead of guessing from a few distant readings. Dr Singh said geographical challenges remain, so monitoring and early warning in vulnerable areas need strengthening.

What has not been said

The report gives no commissioning dates for individual radars beyond "2027" and says nothing about how warnings will reach residents. Those details have not been announced yet. A separate Tribune report says 100 new seismic observatories are planned across the country.
