A meeting between the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Jammu, and the Jammu division of Northern Railway has set out a plan to coordinate on rail freight for local manufacturers, The Tribune reported on 1 November 2026. The article says the meeting was held on a Saturday and does not give the date.

Who was in the room

Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Jammu division, attended, as did Dr Arun Manhas, Director of Industries and Commerce, Jammu, who led the department's delegation. The general managers of the District Industries Centres of Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Jammu and Tarun Singla, president of the Bari Brahmana Industries Association, were also present, along with other officials, industrialists and logistics operators.

What was on the agenda

  • A review of existing freight systems and how to shift more freight to rail.
  • A multi-modal connectivity network to cut transit times and logistics costs.
  • Presentations on the Railways' existing and proposed freight-handling capacity.
  • Future cargo terminals, dedicated industrial sidings and paperless digital tracking, aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
  • Last-mile connectivity for manufacturing hubs.

A spokesperson was quoted as saying the partnership aims to achieve the time-bound targets set under the National Logistics Policy. The report gives no figures, dates or budgets.

Why it matters to young Jammu

Bari Brahmana, Samba and Kathua factories are among the more visible private employers around Jammu, and the cost of moving goods is part of what decides whether they expand and hire. Nothing in this meeting commits to a new terminal or siding yet; it is a coordination step. JammuBeat has followed the earlier moves on the same theme: Bari Brahmana could get Northern Railway's first cargo-related facility warehouse and the JPP-RCS parcel-coach scheme.
