Two notices went up on CSIR-IIIM Jammu's website on the same day, 12 September. One is an honour. The other is a door.
The honour: Dr Zabeer Ahmed, Director of the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in Jammu, has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) for 2026. Dr Ahmed has also held additional charge as Director of CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, since 5 August 2026.
The door, posted the same day: the institute's AcSIR PhD admission notice for the January 2027 session, inviting applications for full-time doctoral study.
Why the second notice is the one to act on
NASI fellowships are the sort of thing that gets a paragraph in the paper and is forgotten by Tuesday. The PhD notice is the one that changes something for a reader in Jammu.
CSIR-IIIM is the city's largest research institute and a constituent laboratory of AcSIR — the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, the degree-granting body for CSIR labs. That means a science or engineering graduate in Jammu can do a full-time, funded PhD at a national laboratory without leaving the region. For most Jammu undergraduates, the assumption is that serious research means Delhi, Bengaluru or abroad. For a meaningful set of disciplines, it does not.
The institute's research runs through drug discovery, natural products and plant sciences, and it is the lab behind J&K's lavender work under the CSIR Aroma Mission — which is to say the science on your doorstep is not abstract.
What we have not confirmed
The admission notice exists and is live on the institute's own site. What we could not verify from an official source is the last date to apply, the entrance routes accepted, the fellowship amount, or the application fee. A deadline of 31 October 2026 is circulating on coaching and jobs sites; we could not confirm it against AcSIR or CSIR-IIIM, so treat it as unverified and work from the notice itself rather than from a secondary date.

Two practical notes. AcSIR admissions generally run on national qualifying examinations — CSIR-UGC NET, GATE and equivalents — so if you have not sat one, that is usually the prerequisite rather than the application itself.
