The story so far
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University at Kakryal, Katra — the closest state technical university to Jammu city — still had seats going spare for 2026-27 when we last wrote about its admissions in late July. Reporting for candidates admitted through SMVDU's own counselling was set to run into August, and the question left hanging was what would happen to seats nobody claimed.
That answer arrived on 5 August, in the form of two fresh notices.
What's new
SMVDU has published a Special Admission Round-1 for vacant seats across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and a separate Round-2 that will mop up whatever is left once national counselling finishes. Between them they add two dated windows to a session that looked closed.
The immediate one is tight. Per the university's admissions portal, the last date to apply for FYUP and PG programmes is 10 August 2026. Everything after that moves fast:
Selection notification: 11 August 2026, 13:00 hours
Fee remittance deadline: 12 August 2026
Mandatory physical reporting for credential verification: 13 August 2026
Round-2 is the longer game, aimed squarely at seats that fall vacant after JoSAA, CSAB, CCMT and CCMN reporting concludes:
Publication of vacancies: 21 August 2026, 5:00 p.m. — the seat matrix will incorporate statutory J&K reservations
Notification of allotment: 22 August 2026, no later than 11:00 a.m.
Fee remittance: 23 August 2026
Mandatory physical reporting: 23 August 2026, after the fee is paid
Which programmes are in play?
The rounds cover the university's spread: B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Des; the four-year FYUP and DYD programmes; MBA; M.Tech; M.Sc; M.A; PGDSEM; and Ph.D across all schools.
Round-1 and Round-2 are aimed at different people, and it is worth working out which one is yours. Round-1 is for seats that are vacant now — places nobody claimed during SMVDU's own counselling. Round-2 only exists because of what happens elsewhere: when a candidate holding an SMVDU seat gets a better offer through JoSAA, CSAB, CCMT or CCMN and reports there instead, their SMVDU seat falls free. Those releases are typically the more sought-after B.Tech branches, which is why Round-2 sometimes throws up seats that were unreachable in July.
The practical implication: if the stream you want shows no vacancy in Round-1, that is not the end of it. Wait for the 21 August matrix.
One caveat worth stating plainly: SMVDU publishes its seat matrix as a separate document, and the tables in it are embedded as images rather than text. We are not quoting seat counts, because we could not verify them. Open the seat matrix on the admissions portal yourself before deciding a stream is worth applying for.
Read the fine print before you pay
Both notices carry conditions that are stricter than a routine counselling round, and they are the sort of thing students discover too late.
Frozen seats. Any seat offered in either round is allotted in strictly frozen status. Requests for branch alteration, internal sliding or academic upgradation are, in the notices' own words, expressly prohibited. The stream you accept is the stream you finish in.
Nothing is refundable. Application fees and academic fees paid for seats allotted under Round-1 or Round-2 are strictly non-refundable under any circumstances.
The default penalty is immediate. Fail to submit the full admission fee by 12 August and the seat is forfeited on the spot, transferring automatically to the next waitlisted candidate without further notice.
Applying is not admission. Allotment stays contingent on confirmed seat availability and on meeting eligibility criteria.
No hostel guarantee. The university explicitly does not promise immediate hostel provisioning. You arrange your own boarding and lodging until accommodation is formally allotted against a vacancy — which, in Katra, is a real cost to plan for.
You have to watch for the call. Selection notifications go out solely by registered email and telephone, and the notices put the burden of monitoring your inbox, your phone and the university website on you.
Round-2 adds one more mechanism worth understanding: a de-reservation protocol. Where there are not enough eligible reserved-category applicants, unallocated seats are de-reserved and moved into the General Category merit pool. If you are a general-category candidate who narrowly missed out earlier, Round-2 is statistically your better shot.
Classes have already started
Here is the part that changes how you should think about this. Commencement of classes for all programmes was 10 August 2026, with the orientation programme inaugurated on 20 August. Anyone admitted through Round-1, and certainly through Round-2, joins a session already under way. That is normal for mop-up rounds, but it means arriving ready to catch up rather than expecting a fresh start.
The reporting windows for the other routes into SMVDU are also live: JoSAA/CSAB reporting runs 13–18 August, and CCMT/CCMN reporting 5–11 August. One inconsistency to flag: the portal gives the window for candidates admitted through SMVDU's own counselling as 3–10 August in one place and 3–14 August in another. If that window is yours, confirm it with the admissions helpline rather than trusting either number.
What to do now
If you are still without a seat and Katra is workable, apply through admission.smvdu.ac.in/apply, which routes to the Samarth portal. Neither notice states the application fee for these rounds, so budget from the prospectus rather than from hearsay. And read the fee structure and refund rules on the same portal first — given that nothing is refundable, that is the document that decides whether this is a good idea for you.
