If the University of Jammu and Cluster University rounds passed you by, there is still a seat worth chasing about 45 minutes up the road. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) in Katra — a fully residential technical university spread across some 470 acres, set up in 1999 — is in the closing stretch of its 2026-27 admissions, and the calendar turns in August.
Where things stand
SMVDU has already run Spot Round-III (held 24 July) covering its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, B.Tech (Biotechnology), B.Arch, B.Design, MBA and reserved-category PG seats. Spot rounds are how universities fill the seats left vacant after the main counselling — candidates are called in order of merit to claim whatever is still open. In practice that means the window for a last-minute place is exactly now, not next month.
Why SMVDU is worth the trip
SMVDU isn't a fallback so much as a genuinely strong option that many Jammu students overlook because it sits outside the city. It runs engineering (B.Tech) alongside newer, less common programmes — B.Architecture, B.Design, an MBA and a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme — on a self-contained residential campus near Katra. Fully residential means you actually live the campus life: hostels, labs, a set-apart academic zone and a student community drawn from across the region, rather than commuting in and out. For a design or architecture aspirant especially, the range of courses on offer here is hard to match locally.

Note the overlap: classes start on 10 August while reporting is still running — so if you hold a seat, treat the reporting date as a hard deadline, not a suggestion, and plan to be on campus in time to actually begin.
Before you report
Keep the essentials ready in one folder: your allotment letter, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, the relevant entrance scorecard (CUET-UG, JEE or the programme-specific test), category and domicile certificates where applicable, ID proof and passport photographs. SMVDU is a residential campus, so factor in hostel formalities and fees when you plan your reporting day rather than being caught out on arrival at Katra.
One rule before you travel
Everything that actually binds you — the exact programme-wise vacancies, the fee structure and the current round notices — is published on the university's official admission portal, and that is the only source you should act on. Aggregator sites lag and get details wrong. Confirm your specific programme's status on the official page before you make the trip up to Katra.
