The story so far
In August, when JKBOPEE was working through NEET-UG counselling, we reported that J&K's MBBS seat pool had climbed to 1,725. Earlier in the summer, GMC Jammu had been cleared to take its own intake from 200 to 250. The seat count is the number that quietly sets every J&K aspirant's odds, and it moves more often than people expect.
What has changed
It has moved again. A revised national seat matrix issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on 18 September 2026 puts J&K at 1,750 MBBS seats across 11 medical colleges for 2026-27 — 75 more than the matrix issued in mid-July.
The split:
1,600 seats across 10 government medical colleges
150 seats in one private college — renewed approval for ASCOMS Jammu, with no new private approvals
Within the government total: 1,425 renewed and 175 increased
Nationally, the same matrix lists 1,40,124 MBBS seats across 836 colleges — 1,27,028 renewed and 13,186 increased.
The line that matters during counselling
MARB attached a directive that is worth reading if you are in a counselling round right now: no counselling committee may, under any circumstances, permit admission against seats in excess of the number approved and notified by MARB. Colleges have been told to verify their own entries and report discrepancies.
In practice that means the notified count is the ceiling, and a college cannot quietly seat you beyond it. If you are told otherwise, that is the rule to cite.
What is not published
The per-college breakdown. None of the reporting we could verify lists how the 1,750 distributes across the eleven colleges, so we cannot tell you which institution gained the 175 increased government seats.
A sourcing note, since precision is the whole point of a seat-count story: the figure above comes from the MARB revision of 18 September as reported by multiple outlets. The seat-matrix public notice currently posted on the NMC website is the 1 September version. If you need the number for a formal purpose, check the NMC site for the 18 September revision rather than relying on a news figure.
What to do with it
If you are chasing an MBBS seat in J&K this cycle, 25 extra seats over the August figure will not change a borderline rank on its own — but it is 75 more than July, and the direction has been one way all year. Track the notified matrix, not the rumour, and keep an eye on JKBOPEE's own notifications for how the revision feeds into the remaining rounds.
