The story so far
J&K's taekwondo players had been collecting golds through the week at Ganderbal, as in our earlier report: Four golds for J&K on Day 4. The championship has now ended.
What's new
J&K was crowned overall champion at the 70th National School Games Taekwondo Championship, played from October 22 to 26 at the Government College of Physical Education (GCOPE), Ganderbal. J&K secured 770 points.
- 1. J&K: 770
- 2. Maharashtra: 670
- 3. Haryana: 500
- 4 (tied). Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh: 310 each
The home team won 13 medals: 4 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze. In the boys' section the top three were J&K, Maharashtra and KVS; in the girls', Haryana, Maharashtra and CISCE.
The Games were hosted by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, J&K, under the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). Director General Youth Services and Sports Anuradha Gupta was chief guest and presented medals and trophies. The taekwondo event followed the Wushu competition, held October 15 to 19.
Why it matters
School-games medals are an entry point to state selection and, for some, sports-quota admissions and jobs. A home-soil title at school level shows depth in the J&K junior pool rather than a single star.
