Two training programmes with Jammu connections ran in the last week of October, one for doctors-in-training and one for first-time entrepreneurs. Here is what each covered, from the published reports.
AIIMS Jammu: interventional radiology, hands on
On 24 and 25 October, AIIMS Jammu's Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging and the Chandigarh-Punjab-Himachal Pradesh chapter of the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (ISVIR) held a CME titled "Imaging to interventions: Bridging diagnosis and treatment" at the institute's Convention Centre. Faculty came from PGIMER Chandigarh, AIIMS New Delhi, and VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.
- Day 1 lectures: safe digital subtraction angiography, acute stroke imaging and interventions, including carotid stenting, uterine artery embolisation and GI-bleed interventions.
- Day 1 workshops: stroke interventions, ablation and TACE for tumours, PICC-line insertion, vascular closure devices, FNAC and core-needle biopsy, and vacuum-assisted breast biopsy. Junior and senior residents rotated through the stations on interventional radiology phantoms.
- Day 2 lectures: genitourinary, hepatobiliary, obstetric and pulmonary vascular interventions.
Prof Sanjeev Sinha, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, welcomed the faculty and stressed the importance of interventional radiology in modern patient care. Dr Manik Mahajan was organising chairperson. The report gives no attendance figures.
CSIR-IIIM's incubator: a month of leather technology
On Friday 30 October, a month-long skill programme in leather technology was inaugurated at the Atal Incubation Centre (AIC-IIIM) in Srinagar, run with the Kashmir Government Polytechnic College, Srinagar. About 14 candidates are enrolled. It was inaugurated by Dr Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR-IIIM Jammu and chairman of the AIC-IIIM Bioinnovation Foundation.
The course covers leather processing, product development and manufacturing, and introduces business opportunities in the sector. AIC-IIIM said it would offer incubation facilities, technical guidance, mentorship and infrastructure support to participants who want to set up their own units. The report names no eligibility criteria, fee or future batch, and the course is in Srinagar, so treat it as a model to watch rather than an open call for Jammu applicants.
Why these two
Both are examples of the same idea: practical, supervised practice rather than lectures alone. For a Jammu student, the AIIMS workshop shows what specialist training in the city now includes; the leather course shows how a CSIR lab is trying to turn skills into small enterprises.
