Speedball rarely makes the front page, but three schoolboys from the Jammu region are now representing India at a world championship. Sayam Kashyap (Jammu Sanskriti School), Aadrit Gupta (G.D. Goenka Public School, Jammu) and Hridyansh Tripathi (Army Public School, Dhar Road, Udhampur) left with Indian team coach Sunny Nanda for the 37th World Speedball Championship in Egypt, scheduled for October 27 to November 2.

All three compete in the Sub-Junior category and qualified through national-level competitions. Nanda, who is also competing in the Senior category, said India could finish among the top three or four teams and that the J&K Sub-Junior players were performing well.

Who backed the send-off

J&K's Chief Electoral Officer, Sanjeev Verma, who has been associated with the Speedball Association since 2010, sent best wishes to the players, their parents and the contingent, praising the association's work in giving young players exposure. The J&K Sports Speedball Association expressed confidence in the squad.

What to watch

The championship ends on November 2. The report carries no fixtures or results yet, so how the three boys fare has not been reported. For readers in Jammu, the story is the route: school-level play, national qualification, then an India shirt.
