2,536. That is the approximate number of central government vacancies the Staff Selection Commission has put on the table in its Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination, 2026 — and the only educational qualification most of them ask for is a Class 12 pass.
For a Jammu jobseeker who finished school and is looking at what a central government job actually requires, this is the shortest route on offer right now. Applications opened on 7 September and close on 7 October 2026.
What the posts actually are
Two families of jobs, filled across central ministries, departments and constitutional and statutory bodies:
Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) — Pay Level-2, ₹19,900–63,200.
Data Entry Operator (DEO) and DEO Grade 'A' — Pay Level-4, ₹25,500–81,100, and Level-5, ₹29,200–92,300.
The Commission makes the final allotment of posts on the basis of merit and the preferences a candidate fills in, so you do not get to simply pick your department.
Who can apply
The age band is 18 to 27 years as on 1 August 2026 — in plain terms, candidates born not before 2 August 1999 and not later than 1 August 2008. Upper-age relaxations run 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, 10 years for PwBD, 13 for PwBD (OBC), 15 for PwBD (SC/ST), and for ex-servicemen, 3 years after deducting military service rendered.
On qualifications, the cut-off date is 7 October 2026, and there is one fork worth catching:
For LDC/JSA and most DEO posts — a 12th Standard pass from a recognised Board or University.
For DEO and DEO Grade 'A' in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission itself, and the Ministry of Culture — 12th Standard in the Science stream with Mathematics as a subject.
Candidates who have appeared in their 12th but not yet got the result can still apply, provided they hold the qualification on or before 7 October 2026.
What it costs
₹100. Women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities and eligible ex-servicemen are exempt from the fee entirely.
The Jammu angle
This is the part that decides whether a national notification is worth a local jobseeker's time. J&K sits in SSC's North Western Region, headquartered at Chandigarh, and the notice lists Jammu (centre code 1004) and Samba (1010) as exam centres, alongside Srinagar (1007) and Leh (1005). Candidates choose three preferred cities on the application form.
In practice that means a candidate from Jammu, Samba, Kathua or Udhampur can sit this exam without an overnight journey — which is not true of every national recruitment, and is the single biggest reason this one belongs on a Jammu reading list.
The dates that matter
7 September to 7 October 2026 — online application window; the last date and time for receipt is 7 October, 23:00 hours.
8 October 2026, 23:00 hours — last date for online fee payment.
14 to 16 October 2026 — the correction window, with correction charges payable online. It closes at 23:00 on the 16th.
Tier-I and Tier-II computer-based examinations — to be notified later. No date has been announced, so do not plan around one.
How the selection actually works
Two computer-based tiers, and a typing or skill test inside the second one.
Tier-I is the shortlisting round, and it carries negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer — which is the single most important sentence in the notice for anyone used to guessing freely. Candidates are shortlisted for Tier-II on Tier-I performance.
Tier-II runs in two sessions. Session-I opens with Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning and General Intelligence — 30 questions each, 60 in all, worth 180 marks, in one hour with a 30-minute sectional timer on each subject. Session-II is the practical part: a 15-minute skill test for Data Entry Operator posts, or a 10-minute typing test for LDC/JSA. Candidates eligible for a scribe get extended time throughout.
Minimum qualifying marks are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for all other categories. Where the exam runs in multiple shifts, scores are normalised using the Commission's published procedure, and the normalised score is what determines merit and cut-offs. Tentative answer keys go up on the SSC website after each exam, and candidates can submit online representations against them.
Two caveats. The Commission has not announced dates for either tier. And the vacancy figure is explicitly tentative — final vacancies are determined after the user departments' documents are scrutinised, so 2,536 can move in either direction.
Before you start the form
Applying runs through SSC's One Time Registration, and that is where most first-timers lose an evening. You need to upload proof of name, proof of date of birth, proof of address, a photograph and proof of gender — an Aadhaar card covers four of those five on its own, which is worth knowing before you go hunting for documents.
You do not need a photograph ready in advance. The application module captures a live photo through your camera: stand in good light against a plain background, camera at eye level, facing straight ahead, and no cap, mask or spectacles. Candidates who cannot manage it on a computer can scan the QR code in the upload section to get an Android app that does the same job on a phone.
If something goes wrong, the Commission runs a toll-free helpline for application problems on 18003093063. One more line worth reading in the notice: SSC reserves the right to divert candidates from one centre to another, so a Jammu preference is a preference, not a guarantee.
If this one is not for you
The other central-government route currently open to school-leavers in J&K asks for even less on paper: India Post's Gramin Dak Sevak engagement selects purely on Class 10 marks, with no written exam and no interview at all. The two have different deadlines, and there is nothing stopping a candidate from applying to both.
One practical warning
The correction window exists, but it costs money and it is three days long. The cheaper habit is to get the category, date of birth and qualification fields right the first time — the Commission's notice is blunt that candidature can be rejected outright for incorrect information.
