JEE Main on January 22, UGC-NET in December: NTA Has Published Its Calendar to March 2027

Mark 22 January 2027. That is the first day of JEE Main Session 1, and it is now on paper — the National Testing Agency published its examination calendar on 16 September, putting fourteen national exams on a dated schedule that runs from December 2026 to the end of March 2027.

For anyone in Jammu planning the next six months around an entrance exam, this is the document to plan against. It does not open any registration and it does not tell you where you will sit — but it tells you when, and that is enough to decide which months you cannot take on anything else.

Read the buffer days properly

Several of these exams carry buffer dates, and students routinely misread them. A buffer day is not an extra exam day you can choose. It is spare capacity the agency holds back in case a session has to be rescheduled — a centre problem, a technical failure, a shift that has to be re-run. If you are given a buffer date, it is because something went wrong with your original slot.

The practical consequence is that your exam window is longer than the headline dates suggest. JEE Main Session 1 is advertised as six days but effectively occupies 22 to 31 January. CUET-PG 2027 is the extreme case: seventeen exam days spread across March, plus two buffer days at the end. If you are a postgraduate aspirant, most of March 2027 is unavailable.

What this document does not do

Three things are worth being precise about, because the calendar is routinely over-read.

First, it is explicitly provisional. The notice states that the dates "are tentative and may undergo changes owing to administrative, academic, statutory, logistical or other unforeseen circumstances."

Second, it is not a notification. The agency spells this out: "The publication of this calendar does not constitute a notification for any particular examination. Detailed Information Bulletins and examination-specific notices will be issued separately at the appropriate time." Nothing here opens an application window.

Third — and this matters most in Jammu — the calendar carries no list of exam cities. It says when, not where. Jammu and Samba have been test cities for other recent national exams, but that tells you nothing about JEE Main 2027 or CUET-PG 2027. The city list for each exam is published in that exam's own Information Bulletin, and that is the only place to check it.

What you should actually do now

1. Work backwards from your date. If you are sitting UGC-NET in December, your preparation runs out in roughly twelve weeks, not "sometime this winter".

2. Watch for the Information Bulletin, not the calendar. Registration dates, fees, syllabus, the city list and the correction window all live there. Set a reminder to check nta.ac.in and the exam's own portal from about eight weeks before each date.

3. Check the clashes yourself. NIFT and SHRESHTA are both on 10 January 2027. Joint CSIR-UGC NET on 20 to 21 December overlaps the UGC-NET buffer days. If you were planning to attempt two of these, look now rather than in December.

4. Keep documents current. Several national exams have moved to DigiLocker-based verification, and a mismatched name or date of birth is the most common reason a Jammu applicant loses a form at the last minute.

Why the December NET matters here

Of everything on this list, the UGC-NET December cycle is the one with the widest reach in Jammu. NET is the gate to Assistant Professor eligibility, to JRF funding, and to PhD admission at the University of Jammu, Cluster University of Jammu, Central University of Jammu and SMVDU — several of which have live doctoral cycles running right now. Anyone who missed out in the June cycle now has a dated next attempt: 14 to 19 December 2026.

It is also the exam most likely to be taken by someone already working. Six days of exam window in the middle of December is a leave application that needs filing well before December.

What is missing, and why that is not a mistake

Two of the biggest exams a Jammu school-leaver sits are not on this list at all: NEET-UG and CUET-UG. Neither absence means anything has been cancelled. This calendar covers the December 2026 cycle onwards and stops at the end of March 2027, and both of those exams normally fall outside that window. Their schedules are announced separately, on their own notices.

The same applies to JEE Main Session 2. Session 1 is dated here; the April session is not, and it will come with its own notification. If you are planning two attempts, plan the first one off this document and wait for the second.

Treat the calendar for what it is — a planning aid with a known shelf life. It will almost certainly be revised at least once before March, and every date on it is superseded the moment that exam's own Information Bulletin appears.
