Jammu Airport has started asking a plain question: could flights leave Jammu for abroad? Airport officials met airlines, security and regulatory agencies, government departments and tourism bodies on Saturday (31 October) to assess whether international operations are feasible, and a spokesperson announced the consultations on Sunday. Nothing has been approved. The launch, as the report puts it, is subject to approvals, stakeholder agreement and operational readiness.

Who was in the room

Airport Director Devender Yadav chaired the planning and coordination meeting. Named participants included the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Jammu Chamber, the Tourism Federation of Jammu, CISF, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the Intelligence Bureau, Customs, Health Services, ground-handling agencies, the J&K Department of Civil Aviation and the J&K Tourism Department.

What the airport said

  • Under the airport's master plan, the existing terminal building would be used for international operations once domestic flights shift to the new terminal.
  • Jammu Airport has been included in the Ministry of Civil Aviation's Hub-and-Spoke Model.
  • Yadav cited religious tourism, Jammu's strategic location, educational institutions, business activity and defence-related passenger movement as reasons for its international potential.

What the city's business and tourism bodies said

Rahul Sahai, chairman of the Jammu Chamber, said selected international routes should be commercially viable and supported by consistent flights, and urged airlines not to withdraw routes soon after launch. He suggested prioritising connections to West Asia, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Europe, pointing to Umrah, pilgrimage tourism and international education. Rajesh Gupta, chairman of the Tourism Federation of Jammu, said the initiative could significantly boost J&K tourism and trade.

What is still open

The discussion covered passenger demand, airline interest, possible destinations, air cargo, operational feasibility, immigration, customs, security, regulatory approvals, infrastructure, manpower and coordination with the Indian Air Force. The report gives no list of confirmed destinations, no airline commitments and no timeline.

Why it matters if you are young and in Jammu

Students heading abroad and anyone travelling for work currently route through Delhi or another metro. A direct international link would change that, but only if airlines see steady demand, which is exactly what this consultation is trying to measure. The new terminal that international flights depend on is still being built; our earlier coverage tracks it: what changes when it opens and the 70% update with a November target.
