Most Jammu students who finish a B.Sc know exactly one route onward: an M.Sc at the University of Jammu, Cluster University or a government degree college. It is a perfectly good route. It is also not the only one, and the alternative has a deadline attached.
IIT JAM — the Joint Admission Test for Masters — is the entrance through which the IITs fill their two-year M.Sc and allied postgraduate programmes. Registration for the 2027 cycle opens on 12 September 2026. It is organised this year by IIT Kharagpur.

The part that changed for Jammu
Here is the detail worth knowing before anything else: Jammu–Samba is on the JAM 2027 exam-city list. It sits in the IIT Delhi zone, alongside New Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Gurugram, Faridabad, Greater Noida, Indore, Mathura, Hanumangarh and Srinagar.
That matters more than it sounds. For an exam sat in a single three-hour session on one Sunday in February, a centre in your own UT is the difference between an ordinary exam day and an overnight journey, a hotel booking and a set of costs that quietly filter out students who cannot absorb them. Srinagar is also listed, so both divisions are covered. There are no international centres for JAM 2027.
Who can actually apply
The eligibility bar set by JAM itself is unusually light. You are eligible if you have completed an undergraduate degree, or are appearing for the final examination of your qualifying degree in 2027.
Two conditions come with that. The undergraduate programme must be completed before the date of admission at whichever institute admits you. And you must be able to produce proof of having passed the qualifying degree with whatever eligibility that particular admitting institute specifies.
Note what JAM does not impose: the exam authority sets no minimum marks and no age limit of its own. Those requirements, where they exist, come from the individual admitting institutes — which means a final-year B.Sc student in Jammu should check the requirement of the department they actually want, rather than assume a blanket cut-off.
Seven papers, two sessions, and a choice to make
JAM 2027 offers seven test papers: Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS) and Physics (PH).
They are split across two sessions on 14 February:
Forenoon, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm: Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics
Afternoon, 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm: Biotechnology, Economics, Mathematical Statistics, Physics
You may sit one or two papers — but if you take two, they must fall in different sessions. So Chemistry and Physics is possible; Chemistry and Mathematics is not. If you are weighing a second paper, that timetable is the constraint to plan around, and it is worth deciding now rather than in October.
The fee, as published in the information brochure and carried consistently across the major exam-information services, is ₹2,000 for one paper for general candidates and ₹1,000 for SC, ST, PwD and women candidates. Confirm the current figure on the official portal when you register — that is the only version that governs your payment.
How it compares with GATE
We covered GATE 2027, whose window closes on 27 September, last week. The two are easy to confuse and are not interchangeable.
GATE is the engineering route — into M.Tech seats and into PSU recruitment at NHPC, NTPC and PGCIL, all of which have a J&K footprint. JAM is the science route, for B.Sc graduates heading into an M.Sc at an IIT. If you did a B.Sc in physics, chemistry, mathematics or biotechnology at a Jammu college, GATE was probably never really aimed at you. JAM is.
The two windows overlap this month, and they do not compete: an engineering student may sit GATE, a science student may sit JAM, and the deadlines are twelve days apart.
What to do this month
Pick your paper before you open the form. The session split makes a second paper a real decision, not an afterthought.
Register early in the window rather than in the second week of October. Portal load in the closing days is a predictable, avoidable problem.
Select Jammu–Samba as your centre if travelling is a cost you would rather not carry.
Check the admitting department's own eligibility — not just JAM's — for the programme you actually want.
Keep your documents ready in the format the portal specifies before you start filling the form.
What comes after February
Results are declared on 18 March 2027. Admission itself runs through a separate portal process at the participating IITs, against roughly 3,000 seats. The admission schedule, the seat matrix by institute and programme, and the counselling calendar are published after the result — so a score in March is the start of that process, not the end of it.
One month to register. One Sunday in February. A centre in Jammu–Samba. For a science graduate in this city, that is a genuinely low-friction shot at an IIT, and it is open from tomorrow.
