242 to 254. That is the new postgraduate seat count at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, after Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced 12 additional PG seats in a post on X on Friday, 6 November, as reported by Northlines.

Which courses grew

  • MD Pathology: 18 to 23 (+5)
  • MD Paediatrics: 18 to 20 (+2)
  • MD Pharmacology: 10 to 12 (+2)
  • MD Microbiology: 7 to 8 (+1)
  • MD Respiratory Medicine: a new course with 2 seats (+2)

The five changes add up to the 12 seats reported. Seat matrices can change again before counselling, so the number to rely on is the one on the official counselling and college notices.

Why it matters to young doctors

Every MBBS graduate who wants a specialty competes for a limited number of MD seats, so each added seat is a real addition to the pool. Respiratory Medicine opening at GMC Jammu is notable because the course did not exist here before. Non-clinical branches such as Pathology and Microbiology also gained seats.

What has not been announced

The report says DM and MCh (super-specialty) seats are "expected shortly" but gives no numbers, departments or dates. It also does not say which counselling round the new MD seats will be offered in. We will update this when an official notice says so.

Over the last two years, the report adds, 70 MBBS seats and 56 PG seats have been added at the college. For the undergraduate side, see our earlier coverage: 100 More MBBS Seats for J&K: GMC Jammu Cleared to Admit 250 Doctors-in-Training This Year.
