When people picture cutting-edge Indian defence technology, they usually think of sprawling labs in Bengaluru or Hyderabad. They rarely think of Jammu. A small team working out of a lab at IIT Jammu is quietly trying to change that — and for the city's engineering students, their story is worth paying attention to.
The team is MachFly Aerospace, a defence-technology startup incubated at IIT Jammu's Innovation and Incubation Centre. Its headline project is SkyReaper, a reusable, jet-powered unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) — in plain language, a recoverable combat drone powered by a jet engine rather than the small propellers that lift the quadcopters most of us have seen.
First, what is a UCAV?
A regular drone is built to watch: it hovers, films and surveys. A combat drone, or UCAV, is built to also act — carrying sensors and, potentially, weapons over long distances. Globally, UCAVs have reshaped how modern militaries think about air power, because they put capability in the sky without putting a pilot at risk. Very few of these systems are designed to come back and fly again; most strike drones are effectively one-way. That is the gap MachFly says it is targeting.
What SkyReaper is designed to do
According to the company, SkyReaper is being built for long-range, high-altitude, heavy-payload missions and "deep-strike operations in contested environments." On paper, the platform targets altitudes of up to 10 kilometres and speeds above 550 km/h, and is designed to carry both intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) sensors and warhead options.
The word that matters most in all of this is reusable. A recoverable design that can fly out, complete a task and return changes the economics of how such a system is used. It is an ambitious target, and one worth stating plainly: SkyReaper is still in development, and the company itself notes that its real-world performance will depend on future testing, validation and deployment. This is a work in progress, not a finished product — and in deep tech, that honesty is a feature, not a weakness.
The engine is the real story
The part that should interest Jammu's mechanical and aerospace students most is not the drone's silhouette — it is what powers it. Building a jet engine is one of the hardest problems in engineering, and very few countries have fully mastered it. For decades, India has depended heavily on imported engines for its aircraft, which makes any serious indigenous propulsion effort strategically significant.
MachFly is developing its own MF-100 turbojet engine programme, using additive manufacturing (3D printing) techniques, and has reported work on an indigenous small jet engine in roughly the 1-kilonewton thrust class for drones and missiles. That research runs out of the Propulsion & Energy Research Laboratory (PERL) at IIT Jammu, where the team handles R&D, testing and prototyping. In other words, propulsion work that usually happens only in the country's biggest institutions is being attempted on a campus in Jammu.
Who is behind it
MachFly Aerospace was founded in 2024 by Shanmugadas K.P., Ayush Divyansh, Preetam Jamod and Lal Mohammad Khan. Beyond SkyReaper, the startup says its work extends to other unmanned combat platforms, loitering munitions and the propulsion technologies that sit underneath all of them. It is a young company taking on genuinely hard problems, and the honest framing is that success is not guaranteed.
Why this matters for young Jammu
For years, the assumption among ambitious students here has been that serious deep-tech careers require leaving — for a metro, or abroad. A company like MachFly, doing frontier propulsion and aerospace work from an incubation centre in the city, chips away at that assumption. It signals that IIT Jammu is becoming more than a place to earn a degree and move on; it is slowly turning into a place where hard engineering companies are actually being built.
There are practical takeaways too. If you are a student in Jammu drawn to aerospace, mechanical engineering, materials science or advanced manufacturing, the existence of a local propulsion lab and a deep-tech startup on your doorstep means internships, projects and mentorship that simply did not exist a few years ago. Incubation centres like IIT Jammu's exist precisely to support ventures like this — and they need students, not just founders. Even following the work closely, understanding how a turbojet is designed and 3D-printed, is an education in itself.
SkyReaper may or may not become the combat drone its founders are aiming for. Either way, the more durable story is that a group of young engineers looked at one of the toughest challenges in the field — building a jet engine — and decided Jammu was as good a place as any to try. For the city's next generation of builders, that mindset may prove more valuable than any single prototype.
