If a student at AIIMS Jammu wants to run a study, or a patient is asked to join a trial, there is a layer of rules that decides what is allowed. On Monday, October 26, AIIMS Jammu spent a day on exactly that.
What happened
AIIMS Jammu, with AIIMS New Delhi and ICMR-New Delhi, ran a one-day Continuing Medical Education programme titled "Ethics, Governance and Good Clinical Practice in Biomedical and Health Research", at the AIIMS Jammu campus in Vijaypur. Faculty, residents and undergraduate students attended, Greater Kashmir reported.
Prof Sanjeev Sinha, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, was organising chairperson. Prof S C Tiwari of AIIMS New Delhi was chief guest and Prof G N Singh, a former Drugs Controller General of India, was guest of honour. Speakers included Dr Roli Mathur, head of the ICMR Bioethics Unit, and Prof Shabab Lalit Angurana, Dean (Research) at AIIMS Jammu.
The topics, in plain terms
- ICMR National Ethical Guidelines for biomedical and health research: the framework ethics committees use to judge a study.
- Good Clinical Practice and the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules: how trials are run and overseen.
- Research integrity and publication ethics.
- The Digital Personal Data Protection Act and health data in research.
- Single ethics review for multisite research, and the role of ethics committees in patient safety.
Why it matters beyond the campus
MBBS and postgraduate students increasingly publish and join multi-centre studies, and the same rules protect the patients who consent to them. The report says the CME aimed to promote awareness of ethical principles; it does not publish a curriculum or say whether sessions will be repeated, so students should ask their institution's research cell.
