Winter weekends in Jammu usually start with one question: is there snow at Patnitop yet? Whatever the answer, the hills above Jammu have more to offer than a single snowfall.
What is there
According to the Incredible India tourism guide, Patnitop sits at about 2,024 metres and draws skiing enthusiasts in the cold season. Madhatop has ski slopes for beginners and experienced skiers, and paragliding is offered at Nathatop and Sanasar. Sanasar, a cup-shaped meadow ringed by conifers named for two local lakes, is described as relatively undiscovered, with trekking, rock climbing and abseiling. The Skyview Patnitop ropeway and zipline and the Naag Mandir, said to be over 600 years old, round out a day.
A checklist
Check road and weather conditions the evening before you leave; snowfall varies from year to year and we have not seen an official 2026-27 winter advisory.
Book stays in advance for holiday weekends.
Carry layers, cash and a power bank; mobile coverage can be patchy.
Start early and plan to be back before dark.
