41% of J&K's Nutraceutical Samples Failed Tests: How to Read a Supplement Label Before You Buy

The Food and Drug Administration says 136 of 328 samples lifted since April did not conform, some without the ingredients on their labels. A new drive is under way in every district.

The numbers

Between April and October, J&K's Food and Drug Administration lifted 328 nutraceutical samples. Of these, 136 were non-conforming, a failure rate of 41.46%. Some failures were products that did not contain the ingredients their labels declared. The samples came from a special drive announced by the J&K Drug and Food Control Organisation in April.

What is happening now

A fresh drive covers all districts. So far officials have made 168 inspections and lifted 146 samples, checking labelling declarations against actual ingredients. Seven labelling violations have been reported, and notices have been sent to sellers and manufacturers. The FDA said: "Samples have been sent to the labs. We will wait for the test reports." Further action will depend on the results and applicable food safety law, and the FDA says such drives will continue.

Why a young Jammu reader should care

Protein powders, vitamins and other supplements are common among gym-goers, students and young professionals. Nutraceuticals sit under a separate framework from ordinary food: the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India put dedicated regulations in effect in 2016, covering composition, safety, labelling and claims.

What the report does not say

  • It does not name any product or brand that failed.
  • It does not say which tests were failed, or give district-wise results.
  • No penalties have been reported yet.

Because the failures reported include label-versus-content mismatches, the practical step is to compare what a pack declares with what you expect, buy from licensed sellers and keep the bill. If you suspect a product, the FDA is the body that takes samples.
