What is being built
A ₹24-crore permanent campus for the Composite Regional Centre (CRC) Jammu is under construction at Chak Jawala village, Vijaypur, in Samba district. Union Minister Virender Kumar reviewed the work on Tuesday, October 27, and stressed timely completion, according to a PTI report carried by The Tribune. CRC Jammu Director Rohnika Sharma briefed him on the work done so far and what remains.
What it is for
The centre works under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, through the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (PDUNIPPD) in New Delhi. Today it runs on a limited scale in Jammu city. The new campus is planned to offer:
- rehabilitation, special education and early intervention
- physiotherapy and specialised training for children
- training for parents and caregivers
- a PM Divyasha Kendra, a point for access to assistive devices
- laboratories to measure, make and fit customised artificial limbs and other assistive devices
The career angle
The report says disability-related courses, including B.Ed and M.Ed programmes, are planned at the campus. For a young person in Jammu, Samba or Kathua interested in special education or rehabilitation work, that would mean a local training route in a field where qualified professionals are scarce. The article does not name the course intake, eligibility or affiliating body, so those details remain to be announced.
What has not been announced
- A completion date. The report gives none.
- When the new courses will begin and how many seats there will be.
- Which services will move to Samba and which will stay in the city.
For families who need services now, CRC Jammu continues to operate in the city on its existing, limited scale. The photo is a file image of Jammu city, not of the construction site.
