If your daily run takes you anywhere near the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, July just got more complicated. The Amarnath Yatra 2026 is here — the pilgrimage gets under way in early July and runs through to August 28 — and with it comes a strict traffic management plan that's already reshaping movement across the region.
The J&K Traffic Police have rolled out cut-off timings and convoy schedules effective July 2 through August 28, covering the Jammu-Srinagar highway and the two shrine-bound axes. This year the squeeze is tighter than usual, because the Yatra overlaps with peak tourist season and Muharram processions in the Valley — something officials themselves have described as a "unique challenge."
The timings that affect you
Convoys begin moving from Jammu in the small hours, so the highway is busiest before dawn:
On the Baltal axis, the UP (Jammu-to-Valley) convoy leaves Jammu around 4 am.
On the Pahalgam route, the UP convoy starts from Jammu around 4:15 am.
Non-convoy and tourist vehicles heading toward the Valley must cross the Navyug Tunnel by 3 pm and Mir Bazar (toward Anantnag) by 4 pm.
Return traffic from Baltal must depart by 9 am, and pilgrims and tourists are advised to travel only between 7 am and 6 pm within the Valley.
What it means for locals
The good news: these restrictions are aimed primarily at yatris, Yatra convoys and tourist vehicles. Local heavy and light motor vehicles aren't bound by the convoy schedule — but you are expected to follow the daily traffic advisory the Traffic Police issue, because convoy movement can trigger temporary holds and diversions anywhere along the corridor on any given morning.
Practical moves for the next eight weeks:
Avoid the pre-dawn-to-mid-morning window on highway stretches if you can — that's when convoys roll out and holds are most likely.

Pad your timing for airport runs, exams, interviews or college reporting that fall near the highway — leave earlier than you think you need to.
Plan weekend getaways around the curfew-style valley window of 7 am to 6 pm so you're not stranded by a cut-off.
The Yatra is one of the biggest events on Jammu's calendar, and for two months the city is effectively the gateway to the shrine. A little planning keeps the pilgrimage's crowds from turning your ordinary Tuesday commute into a two-hour ordeal.
