The story so far

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University at Katra has been working through leftover seats for weeks. We covered the first reporting window in late July, and then two further rounds in early August. Each one has been a straightforward proposition: seats exist, turn up with documents, be quick.

What's new

Under Notice No. SMVDU/AA/26/2616, dated 20 August 2026, the university has opened a third spot round against seats still vacant. Four reporting dates were set — 24, 25, 27 and 31 August — and two are still live: Wednesday 27 August and Sunday 31 August.

The scope is wide. On the undergraduate side it covers all Four-Year UG programmes plus B.Design. On the postgraduate side: M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence, ECE, SM and ES, and M.Sc in Biotechnology, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Data Science, alongside M.A. in Philosophy, English, Economics, Sanskrit, Dogri and Hindi.

One eligibility change is worth flagging: B.Design has been revised down to 50% in the qualifying examination, with a personal interview on 31 August — report at Block-B, 11:30 am.

How the day actually runs

This is the part people get wrong, so read it as a sequence rather than a set of facts:

  • Report at the SMVDU Admission Cell between 10:00 and 11:30 am. Arrive after 11:30 and you are not in that day's process.

  • The merit list goes up at the Admission Cell at 12:30 pm, the same day.

  • The prescribed fee must be deposited that same day. If it isn't, the offer is cancelled.

Bring originals plus one set of photocopies. Seat availability is updated at the Admission Cell on each reporting date, so what is open on the 27th may not be open on the 31st. Preference goes to candidates who have qualified national-level entrance examinations.

Two things worth knowing before you commit to the trip. Katra is roughly 45 km from Jammu city, which makes this a morning journey rather than a day out — but the whole thing resolves between 10:00 am and the afternoon, so you will know either way before you head back. And the notice carries an honest warning of its own: hostel accommodation may not be available immediately.

Helpline numbers are +91-8899246534 and 8899950387; queries go to fyug.admission@smvdu.ac.in (UG) or pg.admission@smvdu.ac.in (PG). Call before you travel — vacancy positions move daily in a spot round, and a phone call costs less than a bus fare.
