The story so far
In August, JammuBeat reported that the Sabarmati Express would be taken on beyond Jammu Tawi to Katra, so that passengers no longer had to change trains at Jammu Tawi: The Sabarmati Express Will Run All the Way to Katra. That plan now has a start date.
What's new
According to a PTI report datelined Jammu on October 17, the Ministry of Railways has approved the extension of the Sabarmati BG-Jammu Tawi Express to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. A Northern Railway Jammu Division spokesperson announced it. The service starts from Sabarmati on October 18 and from Katra on October 20.
- 19223 (Sabarmati to Katra): leaves Sabarmati at 10:25 am, reaches Jammu Tawi at 3:35 pm on the second day and Katra at 6:55 pm.
- 19224 (Katra to Jammu Tawi): leaves Katra at 4:50 am and reaches Jammu Tawi at 7:40 am. Western Railway’s own press release, as carried by DeshGujarat on August 20, gives the Sabarmati arrival as 2:05 pm the next day.
- New halts: Samba, Bari Brahmana and Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan railway stations in the Jammu region. Western Railway’s release lists Samba and Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan for both trains and Bari Brahmana as an additional halt for 19223, the Sabarmati-to-Katra direction.
The report describes the service as daily, connecting Katra with Sabarmati and stations including Bathinda, Firozpur, Jalandhar and Pathankot. Fares and class details were not part of the announcement.
Why it matters to young Jammu
The railway spokesperson said the new halts should help residents, students, traders, industrial workers and military personnel, especially those linked to the Bari Brahmana industrial area. For a student in Samba or a worker commuting to Bari Brahmana, that is one more option in and out of the belt. We have earlier covered the freight side of that area: Bari Brahmana Could Get a Cargo Warehouse.
Check the timings on the National Train Enquiry System or the railway's booking site before travelling; the numbers above are as reported on October 17.
