Anyone who has taken the long train up from Gujarat knows the last hour of the journey is the annoying one. You arrive at Jammu Tawi after roughly 32 hours on the rails, haul your bag off the platform, and then negotiate a bus or a shared cab for the final stretch to Katra.
That step is being removed. The Railway Board has approved extending the Sabarmati–Jammu Tawi Express (19223/19224) beyond Jammu Tawi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, with a halt at Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan station, Udhampur, on the way.
What changes
At present the pair runs daily between Sabarmati and Jammu Tawi. Train 19223 leaves Sabarmati at 10:25 and reaches Jammu Tawi at 18:40 the following day, covering about 1,502 km in a little over 32 hours. In the other direction, 19224 departs Jammu Tawi at 06:05 and arrives at Sabarmati at 14:05 the next day.
Once the extension takes effect, both will continue past Jammu Tawi to Katra, adding Udhampur as a stop.
Who this is actually for
The reporting frames it around Vaishno Devi pilgrims from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab, which is fair — they are the bulk of the traffic. But there are two groups closer to home who get something out of it.
Students at SMVDU, Katra. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University sits at Kakryal, just outside Katra. Anyone travelling to or from campus on this line currently breaks the journey at Jammu Tawi. Now they will not have to.
Anyone moving between Jammu, Udhampur and Katra. The new Udhampur halt adds a daily long-distance service on a stretch that a lot of young people commute for college and work.
And for Jammu students heading to institutions in Gujarat, Rajasthan or Punjab — a well-trodden route — it is one more direct option home.
The bit that isn't settled
There is no start date. The Railway Board has approved the extension; the commencement date will be notified separately once finalised. Revised timings for the Jammu Tawi–Katra leg have not been published either.
So do not book a September trip on the assumption this is running. Check the timetable on indianrail.gov.in or the NTES app before you plan around it.
