For years, getting from Jammu to Srinagar meant a long, winding day on the highway or a flight that could cost more than a month's hostel mess bill. Since this summer, there's a third option that's quietly become a favourite with students: the Jammu Tawi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express.
The extended service — flagged off on April 30 and running regularly since May 2, 2026 — connects Jammu Tawi directly to Srinagar across roughly 266 km in about four hours and fifty minutes. It runs six days a week, and demand has been intense: in its first ten days the trains carried around 45,000 passengers, often at 95%-plus occupancy. Translation: book early.
What it costs (and the concession catch)
This is where it wins over flying. Chair Car fares run roughly Rs 715 to Rs 880, and Executive Chair Car about Rs 1,320 to Rs 1,515, inclusive of catering and reservation charges — against airfares that routinely sit at Rs 4,000–6,000 on the same sector. For a weekend trip home or a Kashmir getaway with friends, the maths is not close.
One important caveat, though: Indian Railways' standard student concession does not apply to Vande Bharat trains (the same exclusion covers Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto). So don't plan around a discount that won't load at checkout — the fares above are what you'll actually pay.
The route is half the point
The line threads through some of the most dramatic engineering in the country, including the Chenab Bridge — the world's highest railway arch bridge — and the cable-stayed Anji Bridge, with stops along the way that typically include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi and Banihal. For a young traveller, that means the journey itself is a reason to go, not just a way to arrive.
How to book
- Platform: Book on the IRCTC website or app (or at the station counter). Search Jammu Tawi → Srinagar and pick the Vande Bharat service.
- Plan ahead: Reservations open 60 days before travel, and given how full these trains run, popular weekend dates disappear fast. Set a reminder for when your date opens.
- Double-check timings: Departure and arrival times can be revised, so confirm the exact schedule on IRCTC or the NTES app before you plan connections at either end.
For students who travel between home, college and the Valley — or who just want an affordable, scenic weekend — the Vande Bharat has genuinely changed the calculus. Just remember the golden rule with a train this popular: the seat you didn't book in advance is the seat someone else did.
