No fresh Amarnath Yatra convoy is leaving Jammu. From 9 August 2026, pilgrimage movement has been suspended on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes while crews repair rain-damaged and vulnerable stretches, with more adverse weather forecast over the coming days.
This is a suspension, not the scheduled close of the 57-day pilgrimage. The Yatra began on 3 July and is still due to culminate on 28 August with the Chhari Mubarak ceremony. Officials have not announced a reopening date; that will depend on the tracks and the weather.
What this means in Jammu
If your permit or travel plan starts from Bhagwati Nagar, do not report expecting the convoy to move. Greater Kashmir reported on Sunday morning that no fresh Yatra convoy was allowed to proceed from Jammu towards the base camps.
Return movement is continuing. The Joint Police Control Room at Baltal said 588 pilgrims - 435 men, 83 women, four children and 66 sadhus - were travelling back towards Jammu in 53 vehicles through the Ramban-Banihal stretch of NH-44. That distinction matters: down convoys may be visible even while the upward Yatra remains stopped.
Why the pause was ordered
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg said recent rain had made repair and maintenance necessary at vulnerable sections of both tracks. The decision also takes account of the adverse-weather forecast. More than 4.8 lakh pilgrims have performed darshan so far this season, according to the administration.
The practical rule is simple: treat the official suspension as open-ended until the administration issues another update. Do not rely on an old permit date, a travel agent's assurance or the fact that return vehicles are moving.

Do not start for Jammu simply because your registration date is approaching. A valid permit does not override a route suspension.
