The story so far
J&K's medical admission season has been moving in stages all summer, and every stage has had a hard deadline attached. Counselling for MBBS and BDS seats opened in late July. Candidates whose roll numbers were missing from the eligibility list were given until 3 August to fix it. Then, on 12 August, the Board of Professional Entrance Examinations published its provisional merit list — the ranking that decides who gets called for what. We read the numbers in that list and found 1,064 candidates from J&K and Ladakh scoring above 500.
Objections to the merit list closed on 14 August. That was the last procedural step before the part that actually determines where you spend the next five and a half years.
What's new
BOPEE has now opened online choice filling. Under Notification No. 152-BOPEE of 2026, dated 15 August, eligible candidates can log in and submit their college and course preferences for MBBS and BDS seats from 1:00 PM on 16 August. The window closes at midnight on 18 August 2026.
That is a working window of roughly two days. It is the shortest deadline in the entire counselling sequence, and it is the one with the largest consequences, because the preference order you submit is the instruction the allotment software follows. It does not ask you again.
What you actually have to do
Log in at jkbopee.gov.in with the credentials you registered with.
Pay the counselling fee — ₹1,500, non-refundable, plus your bank's charges. Payment comes before preference submission, so do not leave it to the last hour.
Open the seat matrix. BOPEE publishes it on the site ahead of choice filling. It lists every participating college, the courses on offer and how many seats sit in each category. Read it before you start ordering anything.

The category rule that has already bitten people
There was a document deadline on 14 August at 1:00 PM, and it has consequences that are now locked in. If you did not submit a valid category certificate by that cut-off, you are being considered under Open Merit, if otherwise eligible. If you submitted a main category certificate but not a valid sub-category one, you are being considered under your main or vertical category only.
This is not a technicality. Reservation categories in J&K medical admissions routinely move cut-offs by a wide margin, and a candidate processed as Open Merit when they were entitled to a reserved seat is competing against a much steeper score line. If you think this has happened to you, that is a conversation to have with BOPEE now rather than after allotment.
How to think about preference order
The single most common mistake in a two-day window is treating the preference list as a wish list. It is not. It is a ranked instruction, and allotment works down it until something is available at your merit position.
A few things worth holding in mind. Put the option you genuinely want most at number one, regardless of whether you think you will get it — there is no penalty for aiming high, because the software simply moves to your next choice. Do not leave gaps in the middle of the list for options you would still accept; an unlisted college is a college you have declined. And be honest with yourself about geography and cost before you rank a private seat above a government one in a different city, because the fee difference over five and a half years is not small and the commute is not theoretical.
BOPEE's own caveat is worth quoting plainly: "Mere submission of online preferences does not guarantee admission." Choice filling puts you in the allotment process. It does not reserve anything.
The two other BOPEE deadlines running this week
NEET-UG is not the only counselling BOPEE has live right now, and if you or someone in your house is in one of the other streams, the dates are just as tight.
B.Sc Nursing, Paramedical and Technology, Round 2. The second-round selection list came out on 13 August under Notification No. 148-BOPEE of 2026. Allotted candidates have to report in person to their institution between 11:00 AM on 16 August and 5:00 PM on 18 August. Miss it and the seat is cancelled, with no refund.
GNM Lateral Entry, Round 2. The selection list is out under notification GNM-LE-NN-150 of 15 August. Joining runs 17 to 19 August, closing at 5:00 PM on the last day. This is the route that lets ANM, FMPHW and MMPHW diploma holders convert a paramedical certificate into a full nursing qualification, and it is consistently the least-publicised door in the whole system.
All three of these want the same set of originals, so the document folder you build this weekend works for whichever stream you are in.
What happens after Monday
Once the window shuts, BOPEE processes allotment against the merit list and the seat matrix, and publishes a selection list. Allotted candidates then have to report physically to the institution they have been given, inside a stated window, with original documents — domicile certificate, Class 12 marks certificate, matriculation certificate showing date of birth, and a category certificate where it applies. In BOPEE's parallel nursing and paramedical rounds this month, the reporting window has been as short as three days, and failure to report has meant the seat is cancelled with no refund of fees paid.
Plan for that now. Get the originals into one folder this weekend rather than hunting for a matriculation certificate on the morning you are supposed to be at a college gate in another district.
One thing to verify yourself
Every figure above comes from BOPEE's Notification No. 152-BOPEE of 2026 as it has been reported. Before you act on any date here, open jkbopee.gov.in and read the notification and the seat matrix yourself. Counselling schedules get revised, sometimes at short notice, and the board's own site is the only version that counts.
