Both fencers have spent this season near the top of India's sabre rankings. Shreya Gupta, a senior national gold medallist this year, trains at the Vijay Bharat Academy in Ahmedabad. Vishal Thapar, a Senior National Championship silver medallist, is based at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. To reach a world championship squad, a fencer has to string together consistent results across a punishing calendar of national selection events — there is no shortcut, and no home-crowd advantage in the trials.
