The quick version: the Katra–Sanjichhat helicopter goes from ₹2,320 to ₹2,700 one-way — ₹4,640 to ₹5,400 return — a rise of 16.4%, effective 1 November 2026. Book before then and you pay the old rate.
For a lot of young people in Jammu, Katra is the default trip: a Saturday, a shared cab, and a decision at the bottom about whether to walk the 13 km or spend the money. So it is worth being clear about what the money buys, because the helicopter is routinely misunderstood as a ride to the temple. It is not.
What ₹2,700 actually gets you
An eight-minute flight from Katra to Sanjichhat, with roughly five or six passengers on board.
And then you walk. Sanjichhat is not the Bhawan — from there it is a further 2.5 km, about half an hour on foot, to the shrine itself. The helicopter removes the long climb, which is the hard part and the point of taking it. It does not remove the walk altogether, and anyone booking it for an elderly relative on the assumption that it lands them at the door should know that before they pay.
Coming down from the Bhawan, the Bhawan–Bhairon aerial ropeway is fully operational, running 09:00 to 17:00.
Is this a big jump?
It is the second increase in recent memory — the current ₹2,320 was itself a rise from an earlier ₹2,210. That revision was small. This one, at 16.4%, is not, and it takes a return trip for two past ₹10,000.
The increase has been publicly questioned since it was reported. As of writing the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has not issued a public statement in response, and the revised fare had not yet appeared on the Board's own public-notices page — so treat the November date as reported, and check there before planning around it.
The cheaper ways up
Walk it. Free, roughly 13 km from Katra, and the thing most people in their twenties can comfortably do. Start early and it is a good day rather than an ordeal.
Battery car. Covers the upper stretch — the option for someone who can walk some of it but not all.
Ropeway. Bhawan to Bhairon, 09:00–17:00, and a quick way to add Bhairon Ghati without a second climb.
If you were going anyway
There are about seven weeks before the new rate. Booking at ₹2,320 saves ₹380 a head each way — ₹760 on a return ticket, and over ₹1,500 for two.
That is not a reason to fly if you were going to walk. It is a reason not to leave a booking you had already decided on sitting in a browser tab until December.
