If a full two-year postgraduate degree is not the plan, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has put a shorter, more practical option on the table. Its Centre for Innovation, Emerging Skills & Entrepreneurship Development (CIESED) is taking applications for seven up-skilling programmes for 2026–27, with a six-month certificate exit and a one-year diploma exit.
The window is tight: online applications close on 9 August 2026. Across the seven programmes, there are 210 seats in all.
The quick facts
Programmes: 7
Total seats: 210 — 30 in each programme
Study mode: Regular
Duration: Certificate after six months; one-year diploma after two semesters
Tuition: ₹50,000 per semester
Apply by: 9 August 2026
Selection: Merit based on marks in the relevant qualifying programme
What can you study?
The list is unusually broad. It runs from software and mobility to construction and skilled technical services:
Smart Real Estate & Site Management
Fintech Services Management
AI in Healthcare
AI & Deep Learning
Electric Vehicle Technology & Smart Mobility
AC & Refrigeration Services
CNC Machines & Advanced Manufacturing Systems
That spread matters in Jammu. A computer-science graduate can look at AI or EV technology, a life-sciences student has a healthcare-data route, and a mechanical diploma holder can choose from EVs, refrigeration or advanced manufacturing. The real-estate and fintech programmes also open the door to candidates outside the usual engineering lane.
Who is eligible?
Applicants need either a recognised three-year diploma or a bachelor’s degree. The acceptable streams change by programme, so do not assume that one qualification works for all seven.
Smart Real Estate: any stream, provided Commerce, Economics or Mathematics was studied in Class 10 or 12.
Fintech: any stream; management or business backgrounds are preferred.
AI in Healthcare: Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Biotechnology or Bioinformatics.
AI & Deep Learning: Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Planning, Management or Economics.
Electric Vehicles: Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences or Engineering.
AC & Refrigeration: Mechanical Engineering, Architecture or Aerospace.
CNC and Advanced Manufacturing: Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Automobile, Industrial Production or Aerospace.
Each programme reserves 15 seats for bachelor’s degree holders and 15 for three-year diploma holders. SMVDU will prepare separate merit lists for the two groups using their respective qualifying marks.
What the ₹50,000 covers — and what it does not
The tuition fee is ₹50,000 per semester. Hostel, mess, bus and other university charges are extra, so a serious cost calculation should include those before accepting a seat. The university says it can facilitate education-loan support under its arrangements with J&K Bank and Punjab National Bank.
The course structure includes a 15-working-day industry or firm internship — or a project — after the first semester. Students completing the full year undertake a one-month internship or project. CIESED also says it will facilitate placement and entrepreneurship support for suitable candidates. That is support, not a guaranteed job; the career roles on the programme page are explicitly indicative.
The dates to save now
9 August: Application deadline on the SAMARTH portal
11 August: Provisional merit list
11–14 August: Freeze, upgrade or reject the offered seat
17 August: Final merit and waiting lists; on-spot admission for wait-listed applicants, if seats remain
11–17 August: Tuition payment and campus reporting for document and fee verification
17–20 August: Registration at the Central Admission Office
17 August: Classes scheduled to begin
The overlap is important: the published schedule has classes beginning while registration and some admission formalities are still under way. Selected applicants should follow the latest portal notice and contact CIESED rather than relying only on a saved screenshot.
How to apply without a last-day scramble
Applications are online through SMVDU’s SAMARTH admission portal. Register with an active email address, verify the OTP, complete and lock the profile, choose the up-skilling programme, upload the required documents, pay the applicable application fee shown on the portal and download the final form and receipt.
Before submitting, compare your degree or diploma stream against the exact programme-wise eligibility list. Keep mark sheets, identity documents, category certificate where applicable and clear scans ready. CIESED’s weekday helpdesk is available at helpdesk-ciesed@smvdu.ac.in and 8899950387, from 9:30 am to 5 pm.
