Nine days. That is what is left on the application window for JKSET/LASET-2026, the test that decides who is eligible to be appointed an Assistant Professor in the colleges and universities of Jammu and Kashmir.
The exam itself is not until Sunday, 25 October 2026. But the form closes on Thursday, 20 August, and eligibility is assessed as on that closing date — so there is no benefit in waiting, and one specific trap in doing so.
What does qualifying actually get you?
Two things, which is the part people underrate. Clearing JKSET makes you eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor in universities and colleges of the UT of J&K (JKSET) and the UT of Ladakh (LASET) — and it separately makes you eligible for admission to a Ph.D.
That second use is why the test is worth sitting even if you are not planning to teach next year. It is the same paper either way.
Who can apply?
The core bar is 55% marks in a Master's degree or equivalent from a UGC-recognised university or institution — and the notification is explicit that the figure is taken without rounding off. A 54.7% is not a 55%.
Relaxations, as written:
50% for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC, ST, Persons with Disabilities and Third Gender candidates, in Sciences, Humanities (including Languages) or Social Sciences.
50% for candidates holding a Ph.D. whose Master's examination was completed on or before 19 September 1991.
Transgender candidates get the same fee and age relaxations as SC/ST candidates.
Still waiting on your result? You can still apply. Candidates who have appeared or are appearing in the qualifying Master's may apply after uploading a Bonafide Certificate signed by the Head of their Department, College or Institute. You are admitted provisionally, and you must finish the degree at the required percentage within two years of the JKSET result or your candidature lapses.
Which subject, and what if yours is not listed?
There are 41 subjects. You are ordinarily required to appear in the subject of your own post-graduation — you cannot pick a softer paper.
The list runs from Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences and Mathematical Sciences through Commerce, Law, Management, Education and Physical Education, and it includes Dogri, Kashmiri, Urdu, Punjabi, Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit as subjects in their own right. If your post-graduate subject is not on the list, the notification directs you to the corresponding UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET or ASRB NET instead.
Where do you sit it?
Three main centres — Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh. The Jammu centre (code 02) is not just Jammu city: its sub-centres are Jammu, Kathua, Rajouri, Udhampur and Bhadarwah. For a candidate in Kathua or Udhampur, that is the difference between a local exam and a pre-dawn drive.
What does it cost?
General / Unreserved: ₹1,200 (₹1,800 with late fee)
RBA / ALC-IB / OBC / EWS: ₹900 (₹1,500 with late fee)
SC / ST (I & II) / Transgender / PwD with 40% disability: ₹700 (₹1,300 with late fee)
The late-fee window runs to 25 August 2026. Note what that costs: applying five days late adds ₹600 for a general-category candidate.
Payment is online only. The notification is unusually blunt about this — demand drafts, money orders, Indian Postal Orders, cheques, cash deposits and any other offline mode shall not be accepted. Download and keep the payment receipt and transaction reference. The fee is neither refunded nor adjusted against anything else, in any circumstance, including if you never sit the exam.

Where to apply
Online only, through set.uok.edu.in or kashmiruniversity.net. The University of Kashmir is the nodal agency for the test, which catches people out — the application does not run through the JKSET information site itself.
You will need a passport-size photograph in JPG/JPEG against a plain white background with the face clearly visible and no mask or covering, a scanned signature, and a valid reserved-category certificate where applicable.
Three things that catch people out
Nothing can be changed after final submission. The notification is categorical about it. Preview the form, check the category and subject fields especially, and correct anything wrong before you submit — not after.
The contact details must be yours. Use an email address and mobile number belonging to you or a parent or guardian, and one you actually check. Every communication from the agency — including anything about the admit card — goes by email or SMS to what you registered, and nowhere else.
Get the category right. The form asks you to declare one of Unreserved, SC, ST-I, ST-II, EWS, RBA, OBC, ALC/IB or PwD. That declaration drives both your fee and your eligibility threshold, and it is not editable later.
If your degree is from outside the Indian university system — a foreign university, or a diploma awarded abroad — you are advised to get an equivalence confirmation from the Association of Indian Universities in New Delhi, and to produce the AIU certificate immediately after the result if you qualify on that basis.
One last practical point: if you are sitting JKSET with an eye on a college post, the recruitment side is moving in parallel. The J&K Public Service Commission currently has 205 Assistant Professor, Librarian and College Sports-Director posts open, closing 31 August — and NET/SLET/SET is part of the eligibility for those.
