Two hundred and five. That is how many permanent teaching and allied posts the Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Commission has just thrown open in the region's Government Degree Colleges — the single biggest college-faculty opening of the season, and one aimed squarely at J&K's own postgraduates.

The recruitment was notified on 31 July 2026 under Notification No. 05-PSC(DR-P) of 2026, and the online application window is live now: 1 August to 31 August 2026. If you have a Master's degree and NET, SLET/SET or a PhD sitting on your CV, this is the notice to read carefully.

What's on offer

The bulk of the 205 vacancies are Assistant Professor posts, spread across more than two dozen subjects — the sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology), the humanities and languages (English, Commerce, Dogri), and applied fields such as Computer Applications, among others. Alongside them sit College Director of Physical Education & Sports posts and a set of Librarian vacancies. The exact subject-wise split is laid out in the official notification, and that table is the number that matters for your discipline — check it before you assume your subject is in the list.

These are Level-10 posts on the pay matrix (₹57,700–₹1,82,400), which in plain terms means a stable, pensionable teaching career in a Jammu, Samba, Kathua or Udhampur college rather than the year-to-year uncertainty of contractual academic-arrangement teaching.

Who can apply?

  • Domicile: Only domiciles of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir are eligible. This is a J&K-only recruitment.

  • Qualification: A Master's degree with at least 55% marks (relaxed to 50% for reserved categories), plus NET / SLET / SET — or a PhD awarded under the applicable regulations, which can substitute for NET in the prescribed cases.

  • Librarian and Physical Education posts carry their own subject-specific eligibility (Library & Information Science and Physical Education qualifications respectively) — read the relevant clause rather than assuming the general rule applies.

Fee, and how the selection works

The application fee is ₹1,200 for General candidates, ₹700 for reserved categories, and nil for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. Selection is not a simple merit-list off your marks: the Commission uses a written examination of 120 multiple-choice questions, followed by document verification, under Rule 45 of the JKPSC (Business & Procedure) Rules. In other words, your degree gets you to the exam hall; the exam decides the rest — so a preparation plan starting now is worth more than a last-week scramble.

The dates you cannot miss

  • Applications open: 1 August 2026

  • Last date to apply: 31 August 2026

  • Correction / edit window: 1–3 September 2026 (your one chance to fix a wrong entry)

Apply only through the official Commission portal, jkpsc.nic.in. Ignore any third-party site asking for money to "register" you — the Commission's fee is the only fee.

Why this one matters

Jammu turns out thousands of postgraduates and research scholars every year, and the honest bottleneck has always been what comes after the degree: a genuine, permanent academic job close to home is rare. A 205-post direct recruitment — separate from the backlog special-drive vacancies JKPSC advertised days earlier — is a real door, and it is open for exactly one month. If you have been waiting for the "proper" Assistant Professor notification rather than another stopgap, this is it.

One practical note: the numbers, subject splits and eligibility summarised here are drawn from the recruitment reporting; the official notification PDF on jkpsc.nic.in is the final word on your subject's vacancy count and eligibility. Download it, read your subject's row, and apply well before the 31 August crush.
