Four-thirty in the afternoon on 31 August is the moment that decides whether the seat you were allotted is yours. JKBOPEE has published the provisional selection list for the first round of MBBS and BDS counselling, and the notice attached to it is unusually blunt: a seat that isn't joined inside the window is treated as cancelled.
If you're one of the Jammu candidates who filled choices a fortnight ago, this is the week that matters more than any exam day since NEET itself.
What has actually been announced?
Under Notification No. 163-BOPEE of 2026, dated 24 August 2026, the board issued the provisional selection list — published as "Annexure A" to the notification — for candidates allotted MBBS and BDS seats after the first round of online counselling.
The list covers both government colleges and private institutions across the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. For a Jammu candidate that means the whole local field is inside this one list: GMC Jammu, ASCOMS, IGGDC and the private institutions in the region all sit within it.
Choice filling ran 16–18 August. The window for representations against allotment closed at 5:00 pm on 25 August, so that avenue has already shut. If you thought your allotment was wrong and did not file inside that window, the list as published is the list you are working from.
The two dates that decide everything
Reporting opens 27 August 2026, from 11:30 am. This is when allotted candidates begin the joining process.
Joining must be completed by 31 August 2026, up to 4:30 pm. This is the hard stop.
Between those two points you download your Provisional Allotment Letter from the JKBOPEE portal and complete admission — and the notification is specific that admission is processed through the online portal only. Turning up at a college with paperwork and no portal step completed is not the process.
Note what that leaves you: five calendar days, one of which is a Sunday, to download a letter, assemble originals, and complete an online admission. It is enough time. It is not enough time to also discover halfway through that a certificate has expired.
What you need to have in hand
Originals are required. According to the notification, that means:
Your 10+2 marks card
Your domicile certificate
Your NEET score card
A category certificate, if you are claiming under one
For Ladakh residents, a compulsory service bond
The practical advice here is dull and it is the advice that saves seats: assemble the physical originals now, not on the 30th. Domicile and category certificates are the two that most often turn out to be sitting in a different district, in a parent's file, or one renewal behind.
A second habit worth building this week: scan or photograph every document as you gather it, and keep the set somewhere you can reach from a phone. Counselling portals routinely ask for uploads at one stage and physical originals at another, and the candidates who struggle are almost never the ones who lack the documents — they are the ones who have them in the wrong place at the wrong hour.
What happens if you miss the window
Nothing gentle. The notification states that a seat not joined within the deadline is treated as cancelled. There is no grace period written into the notice, no second call, and no discretionary extension mentioned.
This is the failure mode that repeats every counselling season in J&K, and it almost never involves a candidate who didn't want the seat. It involves a candidate who read "31 August" and assumed end of day rather than 4:30 pm. Or one who was holding out to see whether a better college came up in a later round, and let the clock run out on the seat they already had.
That second scenario is the expensive one, and it is worth being clear about the general shape of it: in a multi-round counselling system, seats that are returned, forfeited or left unfilled in one round flow into the next. Declining to join is therefore a real strategy for some candidates — but it is a strategy with a cost, and the cost is the seat in hand. If you are weighing it, weigh it against the specific rules published for the round you are hoping to enter, not against a general sense that "there will be another round".
If you're not on the list
An empty first round is not the end of J&K's NEET calendar. What matters now is staying inside the process rather than outside it: keep watching the JKBOPEE portal for the next round's schedule, keep your documents current, and don't let a registration lapse. Most of what goes wrong at this stage is administrative rather than academic.

One caution before you act on any date
The details above are reported consistently by multiple outlets carrying Notification No. 163-BOPEE of 2026. Confirm them against the board's own notice on jkbopee.gov.in before you plan your travel or your paperwork. On a deadline this unforgiving, the issuing authority's own page is the only version worth trusting — and it is also where the next round's schedule will appear first.
If there is one thing to take from this piece and act on today, it is the smaller of the two numbers: not 31 August, but 4:30 pm.
