This weekend it stopped being a construction story and started being a sports venue: on July 18 and 19, 2026, it hosted the Jammu & Kashmir Swimming Association's selection trials for the sub-junior and junior national squads, its first major competitive event.
Sub-junior trials ran on the opening day, with junior trials following on Sunday, drawing what organisers described as enthusiastic turnout from young swimmers across the Union Territory. Selection, as with these trials every year, came down to the clock: swimmers were picked purely on timings against Swimming Federation of India qualifying standards, not discretion.
What the pool going live actually means
For a facility that ran years behind its original timeline, the fact that it opened its doors — even ahead of a formal inauguration — for a genuine national-selection event rather than a ribbon-cutting photo-op is the real story here. Jammu now has a home pool that can run an SFI-standard selection process locally, instead of swimmers having to travel out of the UT just to be seen and timed.
The Divisional Sports Officer, Jammu, who oversaw the trials, said he was pleased with "the enthusiastic participation and competitive spirit displayed by the swimmers" and expressed confidence that the selected athletes would perform to the best of their abilities at the nationals.
Where the squads go next
The sub-junior contingent selected this weekend heads to the 42nd Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championship in Jaipur, Rajasthan, from August 6 to 9, 2026, hosted by the Rajasthan Swimming Association. The junior squad will represent J&K at the 52nd Junior National Aquatic Championship in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from August 18 to 23, under the Odisha State Swimming Association — both events run under the Swimming Federation of India.
