It has been a few months since the Green E-Buses started rolling on Jammu’s roads, promising a silent, smoke-free, and comfortable commute. Replaced were the noisy, rattling Matadors that ruled the roads for decades. But as the novelty wears off, how are these buses actually performing? We took a ride on key routes to give you a user report card.
The Good: Comfort & AC
- Ride Quality: The biggest upgrade is the suspension and the silence. The ride is smooth, and the Air Conditioning (AC) is a blessing, even in the mild winter sun.
- Ticketing: The digital ticketing system and the app-based tracking (where functional) have brought a layer of transparency. No more haggling over change.
- Safety: CCTV cameras and panic buttons have made women commuters feel significantly safer compared to the crowded mini-buses.
The Bad: Frequency & Overcrowding
- Route: Gandhi Nagar to Janipur: This is the lifeline of the city. During peak office hours (9 AM and 6 PM), the E-Buses are bursting at the seams. The frequency—currently one every 20-25 minutes—is simply not enough to handle the load.
- Charging Infrastructure: There have been reports of buses being taken off-road mid-day for charging due to inadequate fast-charging points at the depots. This leads to sudden cancellations of scheduled trips.
