A Five-Day School Week for J&K? What Has Actually Been Decided So Far

Nothing has been decided. That is the honest headline, and it is worth stating before the rumour outruns the fact — because a message claiming Saturdays are off is exactly the kind of thing that travels well on a class group.

What was proposed

A proposal for a five-day school week in Jammu and Kashmir — Saturday and Sunday both off — was raised by Hasnain Masoodi, the MLA for Pampore. The argument put forward was about student load: that children study long hours and finish the day exhausted.

What the department said

Education Minister Sakeena Itoo said the matter would be sent to the concerned authorities for detailed examination. In practice that means the Directorates of School Education, Kashmir and Jammu, which will assess whether the model is workable on the ground. Implementation would follow only if it is found suitable for the education sector.

So what applies right now?

The existing weekly schedule. Until the departmental assessment finishes and a formal order is issued, nothing has changed. There is no notification, no start date, and no announced scope — nothing states whether any change would cover all grades, all school types, or government schools only.

Masoodi has said his resolution on the subject was not included in the selected list for the Assembly session, but that he intends to raise the issue there regardless.

The questions a feasibility check has to answer

This is where the interesting part is, and it is the part no report yet covers. A five-day week does not simply delete a day; it has to put the teaching hours somewhere. The directorates would be weighing things like:

• Instructional hours. J&K's academic calendar already absorbs long winter and summer breaks and weather closures. Removing roughly 40 school days a year has to come out of something — longer daily hours, a shorter vacation, or a trimmed syllabus.

• Exam and board calendars. Board schedules are set well in advance, and the winter and summer zones run on different cycles.

• Staff and transport contracts. Bus operators, contractual staff and mid-day meal arrangements are all priced on a six-day week.

What it would mean if it happened

For a student in Jammu, a genuine two-day weekend would move more than lie-ins. Coaching timetables, weekend tuition, part-time work and exam-prep blocks are all currently built around a half-Saturday. Any of those would reprice quickly.

But that is a conditional, and it should stay one until an order exists. If you see a circular on social media announcing Saturday holidays, check it against the directorate's own site before believing it.
