Kashmir Marathon 2026: Entries Close September 25

₹4,00,000. That is what the winner of the J&K Locals category takes home in the full marathon at this year's Kashmir Marathon — a prize that no runner flown in from Kenya, Europe or Bengaluru is eligible for. It exists for people with a Jammu and Kashmir connection, and almost nobody in Jammu is training for it.

Registration closes on 25 September. The race itself is on 25 October.

A note on geography: this one is a UT-wide piece, not a Jammu-city one. The race is in Srinagar, roughly 250 km up the highway. We are running it because the locals prize category and the entry deadline are genuinely open to Jammu runners, and because almost nothing else on the regional sporting calendar pays like this.

The prize money, in full

The organisers put the total purse at ₹3.21 crore — ₹2.15 crore across the full marathon and ₹1.06 crore across the half. That is unusually large for an Indian road race, and it is split three ways in each distance: an overall category, age-band categories, and a category ring-fenced for J&K residents.

Why the locals category is the one to look at

Read the overall table and it is easy to conclude this race is not for you. Twenty-five lakh for first place attracts exactly the field you would expect — elite international distance runners who race for a living.

The age-band and locals categories are a different proposition. A 22-year-old from Jammu who runs a respectable half marathon is not competing against that elite field for the locals prize. They are competing against other J&K runners, in a UT where organised distance running is still small enough that the entry list is not deep.

That is not a promise anyone will win anything. It is the observation that the gap between "I run a bit" and "I am in a prize category" is narrower here than the headline numbers suggest — and there are two separate ladders, the age band and the locals category, that a single strong run can place on.

What the race actually is

The Kashmir Marathon is organised by the Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir, and carries AIMS — the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races — branding on its official site.

The course runs along Boulevard Road beside Dal Lake, under the Zabarwan range, passing Shankaracharya Temple, Pari Mahal, the Dargah and the Mughal Gardens. It is, by the account of people who have run it, one of the more scenic road courses in the country.

The 2025 edition drew more than 1,500 runners from 11 countries and 27 states, which gives a sense of the scale — large enough to feel like a real event, not so large that entries are a lottery.

The AIMS association matters more than it sounds. AIMS-affiliated races follow standardised course-measurement practice, which is what makes a time run on them comparable to a time run anywhere else. If you are chasing a personal best you want on record — for a future race entry, a club, or simply your own satisfaction — a measured course is the difference between a number and a real result.

Getting there from Jammu

The logistics are the unglamorous part of entering a race 250 km away, and they are worth thinking about before you pay.

The Vande Bharat service on the Jammu–Srinagar run has made this a materially easier trip than it used to be — the journey is now a matter of hours rather than a day on the highway, and we have a student's guide to fares and timings on the site. For a Sunday race you are realistically looking at travelling up the day before and staying a night, which is a cost to factor in alongside the entry fee.

Do not plan to travel on the morning of the race. Whatever the timetable says, an early-morning start time and a multi-hour journey on the same day is how people arrive at a start line already beaten.

The gap in the information, stated plainly

One thing the official race-information page does not publish is the 2026 entry fee. We looked; it is not there. For reference, the 2025 edition was reported at ₹2,200 for the full marathon and ₹1,800 for the half, but we have no confirmation that those figures carry over, and you should not budget on them.

Check the fee on the registration page itself before you commit. Do not take a number off a listings site, including this one, as final.

If you are going to do this, the next ten days matter

Registration closing on 25 September and the race running on 25 October leaves roughly four weeks between entry and start line. That is not enough to build a marathon from nothing, and nobody should try.

It is, however, a reasonable runway if you already run. If you can currently cover 8–10 km without stopping, a half marathon in a month is a realistic target with sensible weekly progression. If you cannot, the half is the wrong race and the honest advice is to enter next year's and spend this one training properly.

The thing that expires is not your fitness. It is the entry window. You can keep training after 25 September; you cannot enter after it.
