Jammu readers weighing a rooftop solar system have a fresh set of official numbers. This update builds on our earlier explainer, 40,000 J&K Homes, 8,673 Zero Bills: The Rooftop Solar Maths.
The story so far
PM Surya Ghar is the central rooftop-solar subsidy scheme for homes. J&K's UT target is 83,500 residential rooftops by 31 March 2027.
What's new
- Progress: 46,133 residential rooftops installed, which is 55.24% of the target against 50.80% nationally.
- Split: 17,809 installations (62.69 MW) in JPDCL areas, which cover the Jammu division, and 28,324 (102.55 MW) in KPDCL areas. Cumulative rooftop capacity is 165.24 MW.
- Subsidy credited: Rs 344.14 crore from the Centre and Rs 13 crore from the UT.
- Pipeline: 89,680 applications, 82,591 vendors selected, 69,460 agreements uploaded and 42,686 systems commissioned.
The loan problem
About 75% of installations in KPDCL areas depend on bank financing. Of 61,566 loan applications, 17,416 were rejected (14,232 of them in KPDCL areas), 38,773 were sanctioned and disbursed and 5,367 were still in process. The categories as printed add up to 61,556, ten short of the stated total, so treat the split as approximate. The report does not say why loans were rejected.
Government buildings are moving too: 8,850 of a 12,994-building target have been solarised, adding 95.64 MW. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo reviewed the programme on Wednesday.
What to do
If you plan to apply on a loan, line up your documents and a bank early, because financing, not the subsidy, is where applications are stalling.
