About 14,500 MW. That is J&K's identified hydropower potential, according to Union Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal, speaking in Srinagar on 3 October, as reported by Northlines.
Ongoing versus under consideration
Mr Agarwal named Ratle, Pakal Dul, Kiroo and Kwar among the projects he spoke about, and said the Centre is considering new ones, including Sawalkot. Sawalkot is only under consideration, so it should not be read as approved. He said: "All these projects that I have told you about are in your UT. And they will not only meet your demand, but will also meet the demand of the rest of the country."
Rooftop solar in the same remarks
- Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, J&K has reached its first 100 MW milestone.
- Districts doing "extremely well": Srinagar, Budgam and Kupwara.
- Districts lagging: Baramulla and Bandipora.
- Nationally, about 50 lakh people have taken part in the scheme.
The report gives no figure for Jammu-division districts. For the household maths of rooftop solar, see our earlier explainer on J&K's rooftop solar numbers.
Why it matters in Jammu
The report does not say where each project sits, how many jobs they would create, or what they cost, so we are not offering any of that. What it does show is that the Centre is talking about J&K power as a national supply question, not only a local one.
What is unknown
No decision date for Sawalkot, no capacity or cost was given in the coverage we read.
