₹66.52 lakh. That is the cost of the project the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) began at a pond in Sainik Colony on October 5, 2026, under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and its "Clean Ponds, Healthy Cities" theme.
What is wrong with the pond now
The pond is neglected. Weeds, silt, sludge and solid waste have built up, which reduces how much water it can hold. A pond that holds less water gives less back to the ground around it.
What the project includes
- Cleaning and desilting.
- Re-profiling of the pond.
- Dewatering and water management during the work.
- Embankment strengthening with PCC walls and stone pitching.
- An RCC filtration chamber.
- GI chain-link fencing.
- Solar lighting.
Why each step matters
Desilting and re-profiling restore depth and shape, so the pond can store rainwater instead of filling with sludge. Embankments keep the sides from collapsing. A filtration chamber is a built structure meant to treat water before it settles in the pond; the source does not give its design or capacity. Fencing and lights are about keeping the site usable and cleaner once the work is done.
The stated aims are to restore urban water bodies, improve water retention and groundwater recharge, promote sustainable urban development and strengthen water conservation infrastructure. In plain terms, rainwater collected in the pond can seep into the ground and top up groundwater, which Jammu's neighbourhoods rely on.
What has not been announced
- A completion date. The report does not give one.
- The pond's present or planned capacity.
- How the pond will be maintained after the works are done.
At the launch, the local MLA, Dr Narinder Singh, said restored ponds would "transform a neglected site into a sustainable public asset." The report gives no other positions on the project.
The wider water question
Pond revival is one piece of the rainwater-harvesting conversation across the region. We have separately covered Katra's water plan, which also leans on rainwater harvesting. For residents near Sainik Colony, the thing to watch is whether a timeline and upkeep arrangement are published.
