Jammu recorded a maximum of 33°C and a minimum of 23°C on October 5, which is 0.6°C and 2.1°C above normal for the date. Over the next five days that warmth meets a change in the sky.
What the Met Centre forecast says
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar expects light snowfall and rain over higher reaches, along with thunderstorms, scattered rainfall and gusty winds, from October 6 to 10. For October 11 to 15, the weather is expected to stay partly cloudy.
The forecast, as reported by The Northlines, does not name individual districts or give rainfall amounts. It also does not say whether the Jammu plains will see rain, so this piece does not claim they will. Treat the city's own outlook as unannounced until the Met Centre issues a Jammu-specific update.
The numbers behind it
- Jammu, October 5: maximum 33°C (+0.6°C), minimum 23°C (+2.1°C).
- Srinagar, October 5: maximum 30.8°C, which is 5.3°C above normal.
- Qazigund: maximum 31°C, 6.9°C above normal.
In other words, Kashmir stations are running warmer against their normals than Jammu is. A cold, wet spell on the heights follows an unusually warm start to the month.
Planning around it
The Navratra travel week of October 11 to 19 overlaps the end of the unsettled window and the start of the partly cloudy one. The forecast says nothing about road conditions, closures or exam schedules, and none are claimed here. If you are planning a day trip to Patnitop or Sanasar, a few practical points follow from what the forecast does say:
- Higher reaches are where snow and rain are flagged, so carry a warm layer even if Jammu feels like summer when you leave.
- Gusty winds and thunderstorms are listed for October 6 to 10; if you can, move trips to the partly cloudy days after October 10.
- Check the Met Centre's latest bulletin on the morning you travel, because forecasts of this kind are updated.
The Met Centre also advised safe storage of apples and paddy ahead of the expected weather, a reminder that this spell matters most to farmers in the hills.
