The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for its Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls for 17 states on Thursday 15 October. Jammu & Kashmir was not among them. The commission said the J&K schedule "will be announced in due course of time, keeping in view the region's weather conditions", and that Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh will be notified separately too.
What is the SSR?
It is the commission's annual exercise to update electoral rolls. A separate, deeper Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has not started in J&K, Himachal Pradesh or Ladakh either, and the ECI said its schedule is also to be announced later.
Why it matters for J&K
- There has been no revision of J&K's rolls since the 2024 Assembly elections.
- Officials say the revision is necessary before municipal polls. The State Election Commission revises panchayat rolls itself but depends on the ECI's exercise for municipal areas.
- The terms of J&K's municipalities ended between October and November 2023, and the panchayats' term ended on 9 January 2024.
What it means for a young voter
A revision is the exercise that brings newly eligible voters onto the rolls. Until a J&K schedule is notified, there is no announced window of this kind. The announcement does not say when the J&K schedule will come, what the weather constraint means in practice, or whether the SSR or the SIR will be used.
JammuBeat will report the dates when they are notified. For the most recent enrolment opportunity, see our guide to the October 10-11 special enrolment drive.
