J&K Bank Is Hiring Again After Five Years: Assistant and Officer Posts, Notification Due in Days

J&K Bank's MD says a recruitment notification for banking assistant and officer posts is days away — its first hiring round since 2021, and the biggest graduate opening in years.

Five years. That is how long it has been since J&K Bank last opened a general recruitment round — and for a Jammu graduate who finished college anywhere inside that window, the bank has simply not been a door that opened.

That is about to change. Speaking at the bank's 88th Annual General Meeting at SKICC, Srinagar on Tuesday, 22 September, Managing Director and CEO Amitava Chatterjee said a recruitment notification for banking assistant and officer-level posts would be issued "in a few days". It would be the bank's first hiring round since 2021.

For a city where the government exam calendar dominates almost every conversation about work, this matters in a particular way: J&K Bank is the largest employer in the region that is not a government department. It hires graduates in volume, it pays on a defined scale, and — unlike most of the national recruiters young people here sit exams for — it posts people close to home.

What has actually been confirmed

Very little, and it is worth being precise about that, because the gap between "announced" and "notified" is where a great deal of wasted preparation happens.

  • The round covers both the assistant and the officer cadre.
  • An agreement with an exam-conducting agency covering Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh is being finalised. The notification follows that.
  • Hiring outside J&K and Ladakh will be limited, and weighted towards local-language proficiency — the bank operates across 22 states, and wants staff who can work in the language of the branch they sit in.

What has not been announced: the number of posts, the eligibility criteria, the age limits, the fee, the exam pattern, the reservation break-up, or a single date. Anything circulating with those details attached is not coming from the bank. Treat it accordingly.

Assistant or officer — what the two cadres mean

In Indian banking these are the two standard entry routes, and they lead to different careers.

The banking assistant (the clerical cadre) is the front-of-house role: account opening, cash and clearing, passbook and deposit work, customer queries, and increasingly the digital-service desk. It is typically open to any graduate, the exam is usually a single or two-stage objective test, and postings tend to stay within a region.

The officer cadre is the managerial track — credit appraisal, branch operations, compliance, eventually branch management — and it usually carries a heavier selection process, often including an interview stage, and a transfer liability that is wider. For a fresh graduate the assistant route is the more accessible of the two; for someone with a professional qualification or a few years of experience, the officer route is where the ceiling is.

Which of these the coming notification weights more heavily is not yet known.

Why the bank is hiring now

The AGM was, in the main, a results meeting, and the results explain the timing. J&K Bank posted a net profit of ₹2,363 crore in FY 2025-26, up 13.5% year on year — its fourth consecutive record year. Total business crossed ₹3 trillion by June 2026. Digital transactions rose 94% across the financial year.

That last figure is the one a jobseeker should read twice. A bank whose digital volumes nearly doubled in a year is not hiring the same mix of people it hired in 2021. Branch-counter work is a shrinking share of what a new assistant does; customer onboarding, digital service recovery, fraud handling and compliance are a growing one. If you are preparing, comfort with banking technology is not a soft extra any more.

What a Jammu candidate can usefully do this week

Nothing that depends on knowing the syllabus, because nobody knows it yet. But the paperwork that always slows people down is worth clearing now, while there is no deadline pressing:

  • Domicile certificate. Every J&K recruitment asks for a valid one, and the tehsil queue does not get shorter as a closing date approaches.
  • Consolidated marksheets and the degree certificate. Provisional certificates routinely cause problems at document verification.
  • A working email address and mobile number you will still have in a year. Recruitment correspondence goes there and nowhere else, and a dead email has cost people interview calls.
  • Category and EWS certificates where applicable, issued recently enough to still be current on the closing date.

If you intend to prepare anyway, the general banking-exam ground — quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English, and banking plus J&K general awareness — is common to almost every Indian bank recruitment, and it is a reasonable bet that the pattern will not be exotic. But that is an inference from how these exams are usually built, not a published syllabus, and it should not be spent money on until the real one appears.

Where the notification will appear

On the bank's own website, jkbank.com, under its careers section. That is the only page worth refreshing. Aggregator sites and Telegram channels will carry it too, and they will carry it wrong at least once first — every large J&K recruitment in the past two years has had a fabricated or garbled version circulating before the official PDF went up, usually with a vacancy count invented to make the post travel further.

The wider picture

This lands in a month when J&K's employment numbers have been unusually visible. The government told the Assembly this session that the UT carries 40,672 vacant government posts, and that JKSSB and JKPSC between them have finalised 7,580 selections since October 2024 against 14,270 posts referred to them.

Against that backdrop, one bank reopening its recruitment pipeline does not solve anything structural. It is, however, one of very few large non-government employers in the region doing so — and for a specific cohort, graduates who have been out of college two, three or four years with no bank exam to sit, it is the first real opening in a long time.

The honest summary: this is confirmed, it is coming, and it is not yet something you can apply to. Watch jkbank.com, get your documents in order, and ignore anyone selling you a syllabus.
