Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar laid the foundation stone of a new Integrated Control Office at Jammu Tawi on Monday, October 19, according to a PTI report.
What an integrated control office is
A railway control office is where staff watch trains as they move and decide who runs when. In Jammu, those functions sit with separate departments. The new building is meant to bring the controls of the operating, engineering, signal and telecommunication, and electrical departments under one roof, with what the railway describes as modern facilities and the latest technology.
A railway spokesperson said the office "will prove to be a milestone in meeting the growing traffic requirements of Jammu Division." The report does not give a cost, a completion date or the building's exact location within the station area.
Why a commuter should care
Delays often start with coordination, for example a track block, a signal fault or a crew change. Putting the people who handle those in one room is the kind of change that is meant to show up as fewer surprises on the timetable, though nothing in the announcement promises specific improvements. The division is also handling more services, including the recently extended Sabarmati Express to Katra, and the station itself is being rebuilt; see our report on the Jammu Tawi rebuild.
