IIT Madras has published the GATE 2027 calendar: registration August 27 to September 27, exams across three February weekends, and a new Robotics and Automation paper.

Open a DigiLocker account this week. That is the single most useful thing a Jammu engineering student can do about GATE 2027 before registration opens on 27 August — because this year you cannot register without one.

IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027, and it has published the calendar. Here is what it says, and what it actually means for someone sitting in a hostel room in Kunjwani or a final-year lab at GCET.

The dates you need

  • Registration opens: 27 August 2026

  • Closes (regular fee): 27 September 2026

  • Closes (with late fee): 5 October 2026

  • Exam — Week 1: 6 and 7 February 2027

  • Exam — Week 2: 13 and 14 February 2027

  • Exam — Week 3: 20 and 21 February 2027

  • Results: 19 March 2027

Note the spread. GATE 2027 runs across three weekends in February rather than one, so which paper you take determines which weekend you sit. Plan around the whole month, not a single date.

One thing worth flagging because it has already caused confusion: registration was originally announced for 14 August and was moved to 27 August. If you saw the earlier date and assumed you had missed it, you have not.

The DigiLocker rule is new — treat it as a deadline of its own

IIT Madras states plainly that GATE 2027 registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals. This is not a suggestion or a convenience option. No DigiLocker, no application.

DigiLocker is the government's document wallet — it pulls your verified certificates from the issuing boards and universities. Setting it up takes minutes if everything works and considerably longer if it does not, which is the actual risk: a name spelt differently on your Aadhaar than on your marksheet, a degree certificate the university has not pushed to DigiLocker yet, a mobile number linked to an Aadhaar you no longer use.

None of that is fixable at 11 p.m. on 27 September. Do it now, while there is a month of slack.

This matters more here than it does in a metro. A student who did Class 12 with JKBOSE and a degree at a J&K university is depending on two separate institutions having pushed clean records into the system, and the fix for a mismatch runs through an examination branch that is not open at midnight. Anyone whose documents carry an older spelling of a village name, or an initial where a full name is expected, should assume a round trip and start early.

What is new in the exam itself

GATE 2027 has 30 test papers, and one of them is new: Robotics and Automation (RA).

That addition is worth a second look if you are in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation or CS and have drifted toward automation work. A first-year paper has no legacy of previous-year questions and usually a smaller candidate pool, which cuts both ways — less material to prepare from, but less competition.

There are also no international centres for GATE 2027; the exam is held in India only.

Why GATE is worth a year of your life from Jammu specifically

Because it is three doors, not one, and at least two of them open close to home.

M.Tech admissions. A GATE score is the standard route into postgraduate engineering, including at IIT Jammu and SMVDU Katra. Staying in the UT for a master's is a genuine option, and GATE is how you do it.

PSU recruitment. This is the one most undergraduates underrate. A long list of public sector employers hire through GATE scores rather than a separate exam — and several of the biggest have a real footprint in and around J&K, NHPC most obviously, alongside NTPC and PGCIL. For a Jammu student, a GATE score is one of the few credentials that leads directly to a well-paid job in the region rather than requiring a move to Bengaluru or Pune.

Research. GATE also feeds the fellowship route — the JRF and project positions that CSIR-IIIM, IIT Jammu and Central University of Jammu advertise through the year. Look at almost any of those notifications and you will find "valid GATE/NET" in the eligibility line.

What to do between now and 27 August

  • Set up DigiLocker and pull in your Class 10, Class 12 and degree records. Fix any name or date-of-birth mismatch now.

  • Pick your paper — and check whether the new Robotics and Automation paper suits your background better than your default branch paper.

  • Read the Information Brochure when it goes up on the GATE 2027 site. Fees, eligibility and the paper-wise syllabus live there, and the syllabus has been revised.

  • Do not wait for the late window. The 5 October extension exists, it costs more, and it is not a plan.

If you are earlier in the pipeline and still working out undergraduate admission rather than what comes after it, our guide to JoSAA counselling covers that end of the ladder.

The official site is gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Applications go through the GATE Online Application Processing System, and the brochure on that site is the only source worth trusting on fees and eligibility — coaching-centre pages carrying figures before the brochure is out are guessing.
