Who gets counted, and when? On 6 October, Census Director Amit Sharma said population enumeration in the snow-bound areas of J&K and Ladakh has concluded. The rest of J&K is scheduled for February 2027.
The timeline so far
- 17-31 August: self-enumeration online.
- 1-30 September: field enumeration in snow-bound areas.
- 5 October: a five-day revision round ended.
- 30 October: District Census Handbook fieldwork is due to finish.
- March-April 2027: results are scheduled for release.
The scale
5,292 enumeration blocks were covered, 4,597 in J&K and 695 in Ladakh, across 16 J&K districts and 95 charges. In the Jammu region the report lists 345 completed blocks in Reasi and 313 in Udhampur. J&K used 284 Charge Officers, 65 Town Officers and 2,854 Village Officers, and about Rs 49.2 crore was released to districts. Enumerators worked on digital devices; Army and paramilitary special charges used paper schedules.
Ladakh became the first UT to complete enumeration, and Kishtwar the first district. Sharma stressed that the census and the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision are two separate exercises.
What it means for Jammu readers
The report does not name Jammu city for February, so watch for the schedule rather than assume a date. Our earlier pieces explain who was counted first and the 1 September start.
