Seven hundred to eight hundred. That is the number of paramedical posts J&K's Health and Medical Education Minister, Sakeena Itoo, says will be advertised through the J&K Public Service Commission by December 2026.
If you are finishing a nursing, pharmacy, lab technology, radiography or ophthalmic technician course in Jammu, that sentence is the most useful thing you will read this week — but only if you understand what it is and, just as importantly, what it is not.
First, the caveat that matters
This is a ministerial statement, not a notification. The minister made it at SMGS Hospital in Jammu while inaugurating new equipment. No advertisement number exists. No eligibility table, no vacancy split, no fee, no exam date.
Government hiring timelines in J&K slip routinely. Treat “by December” as an intention that gives you four months of lead time, not a date to plan a rent payment around. What it does tell you reliably is which body is recruiting and roughly how many — and that is enough to prepare properly.
Wait, isn't JKSSB already hiring paramedics?
Yes. This is the part that confuses people, so here it is plainly. Two separate recruitment tracks are now running:
JKSSB, Advertisement 08 of 2026 — live, applications open 10 September. 518 posts in total, of which 421 are in Health and Medical Education: 232 Junior Pharmacist, 48 Junior Staff Nurse, 47 FMPHW (female), 43 Junior Lab Technician, 20 Junior Ophthalmic Technician, 18 MMPHW (male), 15 Health Educator, 14 Sanitary Inspector, 10 Junior Theatre Technician and one Para Medical Assistant. JKPSC, the ~800 posts — announced, not yet advertised, expected by December. Nothing to apply to yet.
These are different recruiting bodies with different exams and different application portals. Applying to one has no bearing on the other. If you are eligible for both, you apply to both.
What else the minister said
The paramedical line came inside a wider update on health hiring. Around 900 doctors have been appointed through JKPSC; 500 have already received appointment letters from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and 400 more are undergoing CID verification before placement.
On the infrastructure side: a 160-slice CT scanner costing ₹8.30 crore has been installed at SMGS Hospital, an MRI machine has been sanctioned with installation expected in two to three months, and a new academic complex at the Chest Diseases Hospital, Bakshi Nagar, is costing ₹8.93 crore. GMC Jammu was cited as ranking 105th nationally.
The equipment matters more than it sounds for a jobs story. A 160-slice CT and an MRI are not machines a hospital runs with existing staff — they need radiographers and technicians, which is part of why the shortage is being described as acute.
How do you become eligible in the first place?
If you are still at school and reading this as a career route rather than a job alert: paramedical entry in J&K runs through the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE), which conducts the Class-12-based entrance test for paramedical diploma courses at government and private paramedical colleges across J&K and Ladakh.
The course list is wider than most students realise — pharmacy assistant, lab assistant, dental assistant, ophthalmic assistant, X-ray assistant, ECG technician, anaesthesia technician, OT technician, dialysis technician, D.Pharma and physiotherapy assistant, among others. Class 12 with science, and J&K or Ladakh domicile, is the baseline. BOPEE released its provisional selection list for the 2026 cycle in June, so the next entry point is the 2027 round.
What to actually do between now and December
Four months of warning is unusual. Use it.
Complete your JKPSC one-time registration now. Doing this while no deadline is running is far less painful than doing it in the last week of an application window.
Get your domicile certificate in hand. Every J&K government recruitment requires it, and it is the single most common reason applications fail at the last moment.
Assemble the document set: diploma or degree certificate, marks sheets, date-of-birth proof, category certificate if applicable, and registration with the relevant paramedical council where your course requires it.
Apply to the JKSSB 421 anyway. It opens 10 September, well before anything from JKPSC materialises. There is no reason to wait for the bigger number.
The honest bottom line
Roughly 1,200 health-sector posts are either open or announced for J&K between now and the end of the year. That is a genuinely large number for a sector that young people in Jammu have long treated as a dead end.
But one of those tracks is real and dated, and the other is a minister's statement. Plan around the first. Prepare for the second.
