On August 11 we reported that Samba was preparing to stop trains rather than keep waiting for them. Residents had set an ultimatum: restore the station's vanished halts by August 25, or face a rail roko blockade on the Jammu–Pathankot line.
The story so far
Before 2020, roughly a dozen trains stopped at Samba. The pandemic took most of them away and they never came back — by this month the station was down to a DMU and a single Haridwar-bound service. For students travelling to exams and interviews, and for anyone from the district heading to south India for college or work, that meant getting to Jammu Tawi first and paying for the transfer.
Assurances had come before. A year earlier an MP had announced approval for several stoppages on social media; nothing followed. The Union Railway Minister had said services would resume "shortly," without naming a train or a date. That history is precisely why residents stopped accepting undated promises.
What's new
Jammu Railway Division has restored stoppages of six trains at Samba station, phased in from today. The six:
20434 — Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Subedarganj
16787 — Tirunelveli–Katra
14803 — Bhagat Ki Kothi–Jammu Tawi
14804 — Jammu Tawi–Bhagat Ki Kothi
16317 — Kanyakumari–Katra
16031 — MGR Chennai Central–Katra
The rollout is staggered rather than simultaneous: general implementation begins August 15, with 16031 from August 16, 16787 from August 17 and 16317 from August 21. Train 20434 is being flagged off at 5:26 pm today.
Three of them — 16787, 16317 and 16031 — also have their Jammu Tawi timings adjusted by five minutes. If you are meeting one of those at Jammu Tawi rather than Samba, check the revised time rather than the one you remember.
Separately, the Railways have approved a Samba halt for trains 19223/19224, the Sabarmati Express, along with its extension from Jammu to Katra — effective October 18. That is two months out, and it is a different announcement from today's six.
What it means if you travel from Samba
Four of the six run to or from south India — Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Chennai — which is the corridor Samba students heading to colleges in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have been changing trains for. Two more connect to Jodhpur via Bhagat Ki Kothi. The practical change is that boarding no longer starts with getting yourself and your luggage to Jammu Tawi.
One sensible caution before you book on the strength of this: phased restorations sometimes shift by a few days, and reservation charts are the authority, not a press announcement. Confirm your specific train on the NTES app, the railway website or helpline 139 before you plan around it.
