The story so far: In September, MBBS and BDS interns across J&K stopped work over a stipend of ₹12,300 a month. They returned after being told a decision would come within 30 days; see our earlier update. That decision has now arrived.
What's new
- The Health and Medical Education Department has issued a formal order raising the monthly stipend from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000, an increase of ₹12,700.
- It is effective from October 1, 2026.
- It covers MBBS and BDS interns in J&K, including Foreign Medical Graduates.
The government announced the revision on Wednesday, October 21, and the All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA) called off its ongoing strike. Interns had said the agitation intensified because the earlier assurance was not followed by a formal order within the stipulated time.
What AIMSA says
AIMSA said the issuance of the order "had addressed the principal demand behind the strike" and thanked the government, administrative officials and political representatives who supported the campaign. AIMSA J&K president Dr Mohammad Momin Khan said the achievement belonged to all interns who remained united.
The association's next priority is a higher stipend for postgraduate resident doctors in MD, MS, MDS and DNB courses in J&K. No timeline for that has been reported.
What it means for students
For interns at GMC Jammu and the dental college, the practical question is when the revised amount reaches bank accounts, and whether the October 1 date means arrears. The report does not say; ask your college administration. The source reports the department's view only through AIMSA's account of the order; we have not seen the order text.
